A conference on the topic of 'Discipline and Punish: The Early Modern University Court in the Theory and Practice is taking place at the ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓÆµ on 14-15 January 2026. The conference is convened as part of the Taighde Éireann – Research Ireland Laureate Award project, 'MALCONTENTS: Order and Disorder in the Early Modern World of Learning,' P.I. Dr Richard Kirwan. The conference explores the history of the internal discipline of early modern universities where students, professors, university officers and servants were subject to the legal jurisdiction of the university. The conference features papers on the structures and characteristics of university justice from international scholars and from the MALCONTENTS project team. The keynote speaker is Prof. Dr. Marian Füssel (University of Göttingen). The conference is convened by Dr Wouter Kreuze (History) and Dr Richard Kirwan (History).
