Tuesday, 13 January 2026

Dr Stefano Angeleri has been appointed General Coordinator of the A.N.E.S.C./R.A.C.S.E. Academic Network on the European Social Charter / Réseau académique sur la Charte sociale européenne et les droits sociaux.

A.N.E.S.C. is a non-profit network that brings together academics and key allies who share a common interest in advancing socioeconomic rights. United by a belief in the transformative potential of law and scholarship, its members contribute their expertise in promoting the European Social Charter and the wider architecture of social rights protection in Europe, while fostering dialogue with experiences and practices from other regions of the world.

The European Social Charter is a sister treaty to the European Convention on Human Rights, complementing the latter’s protection—primarily focused on civil and political rights—by extending it to everyday social rights relating to employment, housing, health, education, social protection, and welfare. No other pan-European legal instrument offers such a comprehensive and robust framework for the protection of social rights. The Charter also serves as an important point of reference in European Union law, as most of the social rights enshrined in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights are grounded in its corresponding provisions.

Originally established by the Council of Europe’s Department of Social Rights (in 2006), A.N.E.S.C., since 2013, operates as an NGO while maintaining close collaborative links with the Council of Europe. Its work is dedicated to nurturing comparative perspectives and cross-regional learning on social justice and human dignity through: (1) education and training initiatives; (2) research projects and scholarly publications; (3) the provision of expert legal analysis; and (4) contributions to national and international judicial or quasi-judicial proceedings, notably through amicus curiae interventions.

This appointment underscores the strong commitment of the ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ School of Law, and of the wider AHSS Faculty, to the advancement of human rights and social justice in Ireland and across Europe. We warmly congratulate Dr Angeleri and look forward to supporting his leadership in this important role.
