On 15 September 2025, Dr Darina Slattery (School of EIC) co-led a workshop with Professor Manolis Mavrikis (University College London) at the European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning (ECTEL 2025) [link: ], which took place at Newcastle and Durham Universities from 15-19 September.

This recent workshop built on a previous 'Teaching TEL' workshop at ECTEL 2023, which Darina also co-organised. The previous workshop examined the similarities and differences between technology enhanced learning (TEL) programmes across Europe, UK, and beyond. While AI was also discussed at the 2023 workshop, the rapid advancements in AI in the past two years necessitated a dedicated workshop to focus solely on the teaching of AI in TEL/ EdTech programmes.

The main goals for the recent workshop were to collaboratively:

  • Identify the AI/GenAI skills and competencies that are taught鈥攁nd need to be taught鈥攖o prepare the next generation of digital learning professionals.
  • To identify pedagogical methods, challenges, and strategies for teaching the necessary skills.

The workshop was attended by academic staff and students from at least six countries, including participants who teach/study on EdTech, and non-EdTech, programmes. During the workshop, participants discussed activities and strategies they employ to teach AI skills to staff and students, the challenges they encounter, and suggestions for dealing with those challenges. Participants also discussed plans to collaborate on courses and strategies. The workshop details can be found here [link: ].

The day after the ECTEL workshop, Darina attended the Artificial Intelligence in Education at Oxford University (AIEOU) Inaugural Convening in London, where she networked and attended presentations addressing all aspects of AI in education.

Participation in the ECTEL 2025 workshop was jointly funded by the School of English, Irish, and Communication and the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Research Committee 九色视频.
