assessment and technology
Wednesday, 9 July 2025

Dr Elaine Walsh (School of English, Irish, and Communication) co-presented a workshop with Dr John Knight (Imperial College London, UK) at the International Conference on Education and New Developments (Budapest, Hungary) on 28 June, 2025.

The workshop focused on the 5 Cs Framework for the effective communication of assessment, which we developed based on best practice and empirical research.

In addition to detailing the need for clear, consistent, concise, and comprehensive assignment briefs, we discussed the need to engage in conversation around the brief. This approach to assignment brief design was explored through the lens of transparency: techno-rational, socio-cultural, and socio-material.

Over the course of this three-day conference, there were many interesting presentations. However, the influence of GenAI was evident. Dr Dhanushi Abeygunawardena (University of New South Wales, Australia) presented a three-level ranking system to determine the level of modification required in your assessment strategy following the introduction of GenAI: low, medium, and high. The key advice was to focus on the process more than the product, aim for higher levels on Bloom’s taxonomy, create multi-step assignments, and design assignment tasks that are more specific to the context.

Dr Paraskevi Chatzipanagiotou (European University of Cyprus) presented findings from school leaders on the need for digital literacy, ethical AI usage, and change management. Björn Sjödén (Halmstad University) and Jeroen Lievens (KU Leuven) presented two workshops focusing on GenAI. The first was the use of GenAI tools for grading and providing feedback, and the second was the use of GenAI tools in the research process. Both provided insight into the benefits and limitations of GenAI in some of the key activities we engage in as academics.
