Meet our “Bernalite,” Tara Ryan a PhD researcher in the actuate lab under the supervision of Bernal PI member Sarah Guerin in the Bernal Institute.

Tara works with piezoelectricity, the process by which certain materials generate electricity when they are stretched or compressed. These materials have a wide range of applications, but the most effective ones often contain lead, which poses environmental concerns. Tara and her team are working to develop eco-friendly alternatives that maintain performance without the harmful impact.

Meet our “Bernalite,” Deaglán Bowman originally from Norwich in the UK.

Deaglán is a PhD researcher in the field of lithium sulphur batteries and is in his fourth year with the Bernal Institute. From his passion for electrochemistry during his undergraduate degree with Coventry University to nano sensors and wastewater electrolysis, each step has edged him closer to unlocking his vast interest in advanced battery research.

Meet our “Bernalite” Dr Maryam Karimijafari, a Post Doctoral researcher in materials science, pharmaceutical processing and sustainable manufacturing.

Maryam’s current research is centered on the development and design of recyclable bio-based piezoelectric materials for energy harvesting from ambient vibrations.

Meet our “Bernalite,” Laura Coffey, a PhD researcher in protein crystallization.

Laura's research area focuses on how protein crystalizes and the possibility to control parameters such as the size or number of crystals in a batch.

Meet our "Bernalite," Pavan Rao, a PhD researcher in mechanical engineering.

Pavan’s area of research is in micromechanical testing of materials, more specifically metals.

Nataly’s area of research is in liquid-to-liquid interfaces, which is an innovative course in electrochemistry.

Meet our “Bernalite,” Adrian Hannon, a PhD researcher in biosensors and the development of a biosensing platform.

Adrian designs the sensor architecture and the structures of the active site of the sensor. As well as the immobilisation layer or the bio recognition layer.

Sara is working in the field of Crystallisation of Pharmaceutical compounds using Liquid Phase Transmission Electron Microscopy.

Seamus's focus is in cancer treatments.

Meet our “Bernalite,” Kyriaki Koupepidou who is originally from Cyprus. Kyriaki is a PhD researcher in Materials Chemistry.

Her research area involves the investigation of developing new material for environmental applications.
