Summary Outline of User Roles in Brightspace.
Super Administrator and Administrator:
These two roles are system administration roles used by ITD to manage the Brightspace system. They have full access and permissions to all sites and tools. These roles are used for troubleshooting, enterprise changes and system configuration.
- Faculty Learning Technologist (FLT)
- Faculty Learning Technologist is the role assigned to Learning Technologists who require Instructor access to large cohorts of modules. It allows full control over course content, communication tools, class organization and administration. This role is assigned to selected Faculty Learning Technologists by each of the Faculty Learning, Teaching and Assessment Committees.
Faculty Learning Technologist – Manually Added (FLT Manually Added)
This is a copy of the FLT role that enables instructors to manually add Faculty Learning Technologists to their module.
Instructor Role:
This role is the default role assigned to the module coordinators as per SI.
Instructor-Manually Added (IMA)
This role is used to add additional instructors and has the same permissions as Instructor role.​â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹For these roles full permissions view here
Guest Instructor:
A guest instructor contributes with teaching occasionally but does not have a substantial responsibility on the design, delivery and evaluation of the module.
Learner Role:
The Learner role is the default role assigned to students as per SI. It allows them to view course content, participate in activities, and see their own grades (if visible).
Learner-Manually Added (LMA)
A Copy of the Learner role for additional students not enrolled as per SI, once a student is enrolled via SI their role will be converted to Learner role.
Teaching Assistant (TA):
The Teaching Assistant role supports Academic Assistants, Lab Technicians, and Moderators in assisting instructors with module delivery in Brightspace. TAs have full access to create, edit, delete content, grade assignments, and communicate with students. This role appears in the Classlist.

Faculty Facilitator (FF):
The Faculty Facilitator role is for administration staff who require Instructor-level permissions to assist academics with course management in Brightspace.
- School Facilitator (SF)
This is a copy of the Faculty Facilitator (FF) role but gives Administration staff access to all modules in a school.

External Examiner (EE):
The External Examiner role allows users to view all student assessment submissions, such as quizzes and assignments, without making any changes to the module.

The Read Only role provides users with view-only access to all course content, without the ability to participate in events or grading. This role is used for guests, demonstrations, or auditing purposes.

Please note, all changes to roles and permissions are subject to the ITD Change Control Process and may require further analysis and debate depending on impact with final approval/sign-off by the VLE Management Board.

*Quick Eval– allows instructors to view an aggregated list of all student activity awaiting evaluation – full access.
*Intelligent Agents enables lecturers to personalise and automate emails to students. They are particularly useful to engage large cohorts of students, keeping them on track to complete learning activities and assignments.
*Insights Portal are insights provides different views, to faculty, on data and metrics, which highlights activity in their course.
*Course Reset returns your course to an empty shell.
*Learning Repository is an online library for storing, managing, and sharing your learning resources (learning objects). A learning object can be a quiz, a presentation, an image, a video, or any other kind of document or file you use to create course content and learning materials for online learning.
