Envisioning the Future Market for Recycled Fertilisers in Ireland

Kemmy Business School, ɫƵ – October 15, 2025

Over 30 participants,  including researchers, farmers, industry representatives, and policymakers, came together at the Kemmy Business School, ɫƵ, to co-design the future of Ireland’s recycled fertiliser market. The event, held as part of Irish Bioeconomy Week, explored how new circular markets can take shape through collaboration, foresight, and innovation.

Hosted under the banner “Envisioning the Future Market for Recycled Fertilisers in Ireland,” the workshop drew on insights from the ReNu2Cycle, SIMONE, REGENERATE, NPower, UrBioPro, LabMAcc, UProtein, Diary Processinf technology Centre projects. Participants engaged in a Futures Market Scenario Sprint ; a hands-on process that encouraged them to imagine how the market for recycled nutrients could look in 2035.

Through this collaborative process, the group identified the key concerns shaping the ‘missing markets’ for recycled nutrients, including issues of trust, regulatory clarity, and supply chain coordination, and designed potential interventions to address them. These ranged from policy and certification frameworks to new market devices and mechanisms for building transparency and confidence among producers and users.

The outcomes of the workshop will be collated and shared with participants and the wider bioeconomy community in the coming weeks, contributing to the next steps in developing viable, sustainable, and inclusive markets for recycled nutrients in Ireland.

As Ireland seeks to move toward a circular and low-carbon agricultural future, events such as this highlight the importance of bringing together diverse perspectives, from farm-level practice to national policy,  to collectively shape the markets of tomorrow.
