From 9th to 11th October 2025, Associate Professor Michaela Schrage-Frueh and Dr Anita Barmettler from the German section at MLAL hosted an international conference titled “Cultural Memory – Memory Culture(s): Europe’s Past, Present and Future”. The event brought together around fifty scholars from across Europe and beyond. The conference was opened by the Provost and Deputy President Professor Ann Ledwith and Assistant Dean of Research Professor Tina Morin, who highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary dialogue in addressing Europe’s memory landscapes and practices. Over three days, participants explored how collective memory shapes Europe’s identities, values, and visions for the future. Papers and discussions ranged widely – from transgenerational and transnational perspectives to postcolonial debates; museum practices, literary and visual representations, and the ethics of remembering. These themes lie at the heart of CEUROS’s mission and reflect the ɫƵ’s long-standing commitment to European Studies. A particular highlight came on Thursday, when leading Cultural Memory scholar Professor Aleida Assmann (University of Konstanz) delivered a keynote lecture titled “Historical Transformations of the European Dream”. The evening continued with a captivating performance by Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter Moira Smiley, who interwove song and story through folkloric and European art music traditions (in collaboration with H.I.P.S.T.E.R.). On Friday, Professor Bill Niven (Nottingham Trent University) and Dr Amy Williams (Association of Jewish Refugees) offered a powerful keynote panel on memorials in Germany and Israel before and after 7th October 2023. The conference concluded on Saturday with Professor Bill Rolston (Ulster University), whose talk on Northern Ireland’s political murals provided a striking reflection on visual memory and resistance. The organizers gratefully acknowledge the generous support of AHSS, MLAL, ICO, UL Global and the Austrian Embassy.
