What you will study

The Bachelor of Science in Speech and Language Therapy is a four-year degree programme which includes a minimum of 450 hours of practice education placement completed at various sites, including hospitals, primary care services, disability services, schools and rehabilitation settings.

In your first year, you will build a strong foundation in the core disciplines that underpin speech and language therapy. These include anatomy and physiology, human development across the lifespan, linguistics, phonetics, psychology, and sociology. These subjects provide essential insights into how communication and swallowing develop and function.

As you progress through the programme, you’ll delve into specialised modules focused on the speech, language, communication, and swallowing needs of children, young people, and adults. You will develop key professional competencies such as clinical reasoning, communication and advocacy, and the ability to apply evidence-based practice.

Throughout your studies, you will engage in interprofessional learning opportunities, including modules on leadership in healthcare and building partnerships in the community. You will also undertake a research project, allowing you to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field.

Pre-placement Health Screen and Vaccination Check

On practice education placement you will be considered a category A Health Care worker and must therefore fulfil vaccination requirements. Successful completion of the health screening, vaccinations certification and CPR certification are programme requirements for this degree. Health screening/vaccination certificates and the purchase of uniforms for placements will incur costs to the student.

Please note that practice education placements take place at a variety of sites nationally and will incur additional costs for students of travel and accommodation.
