Adapting for context: Rethinking school-based physical activity interventions
Biography: Russ Jago is Professor of Physical Activity and Public Health at the University of Bristol where he co-leads the Centre for Public Health in Bristol Medical School. He is the Director of the NIHR Public Health Intervention Response Team (PHIRST) Insight which provides rapid evaluations of local authority public health interventions. He co-leads the Diet and Physical Activity theme in the NIHR Bristol Biomedical Research Centre and the Public Health theme in NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) West. In addition to these roles the bulk of his research focusses on active travel and physical activity. He is leading a large natural experiment evaluation of an active travel intervention in Wales. He also leads the Passport project which is developing a context specific intervention for increasing physical activity in UK primary schools. This project was awarded as an EU Advanced award but is now funded by UK Research and Innovation as a Frontier Award. In this talk Russ will provide an overview of the rationale for the Passport project and the current progress of the work. This will include an overview of how the intervention has been developed and the design of the stepped-wedge evaluation which starts in 2026.
