Brief Description
Gain the practical skills you need for a career in economics and economics related fields with UL鈥檚 highly ranked one-year, full-time Master of Science (MSc) in Economics and Policy Analysis.
This programme features a strong focus on policy aspects of economics in areas such as macroeconomics, health economics, industrial development, education and labour.
The programme, recently ranked in the top 50 Masters in Western Europe by has an extremely strong employment record, with past graduates working across the private and public sector.
It is the only Master's course in economics in Ireland that offers the potential for students to gain a double degree and enhance their international exposure and career opportunities through our partnership with HEC Li猫ge (the Business School of the University of Li猫ge).
During this programme, you will:
- Benefit from a strong applied public policy focus which prepares you for positions that require the application of economic knowledge and practical skills.
- Gain applied economic skills such as data analysis, econometrics and policy analysis.
- Develop a broader understanding of contemporary economic theories.
- Explore some of the key challenges facing the global economy.
Key Information:
- Complete full-time in one year
- Delivered on campus

- Submit dissertation at the end of the summer semester
- There will be an optional module in the autumn and spring semester that you can choose from alongside the 6 other modules

Year 1
Autumn Semester
Core modules:

- familiarises students with modern data analysis and econometrics for applied economics.
- provides a thorough revision of the basic mathematical and statistical techniques used in applied economic analysis.
- provides a comprehensive set of economic tools to critically appraise fundamental issues in the economics of health.
- ) outlines the theory and empirics necessary to examine the international macro economy and explore key issues shaping our global economy.
- covers fundamental aspects of microeconomic theory with a special focus on applications for policy.
Optional module:
Spring Semester
Core modules:
- details some of the key challenges facing the global economy.
- helps students develop a research proposal that will form the basis of their master's dissertation.
- covers a range of techniques widely used in modem applied econometric work.
- provides theoretical and empirical perspectives on important issues in public finance.
- exposes students to current thinking in the field of industrial development and policy from theoretical and practice perspectives.
- provides an understanding of the central theoretical and empirical issues raised within education and labour from an economic perspective.
Optional module:
Summer Semester
- enables students to develop and demonstrate independent research skills, critical thinking skills and apply them to an issue of importance.
Year 2
A limited number of students have the option to pursue a Double Degree at the Business School of the University of Li猫ge.
Books and journal articles needed for the course will be available online through the UL Glucksman Library.

- Applicants should hold a bachelor鈥檚 degree ( Level 8) with at least a second-class honour, grade 2 (2:2) in economics or a programme where economics is a major component.
- The university may shortlist and invite you to an interview.鈥
