Brief Description
Advance your career in public administration, international organisations, NGOs, or business with our Master of Arts in International Studies.
This one-year, full-time programme explores global issues such as terrorism, nuclear proliferation, global inequality, and globalisation through the lens of international relations theories.
You鈥檒l gain analytical skills and research expertise, with the flexibility to tailor your learning through a wide range of elective modules.
During this programme, you will:
- Explore key international political phenomena and global challenges
- Develop expertise in areas that match your interests
- Learn to apply social scientific research methods
- Gain analytical and transferable skills to enhance your employability
- Participate in an optional study trip to Brussels or Geneva
Key information:
- Complete full-time in one year
- Delivered on campus
- Modules taught during autumn and spring semesters
- Submit a dissertation at the end of the summer semester
You will learn through a blend of:
- Lectures, workshops, and experiential learning
- Reflective practice and supervised research
- Regular feedback from faculty and peers
Year 1
Autumn Semester
Core modules:
- examines significant theories, issues, and debates in the study of International Relations.
- familiarises students with alternative approaches to the conduct of research in social sciences.
Electives 鈥 choose 1:
Spring Semester
Core modules:
- develops an understanding of the theories and methods used in the empirical study of International Relations.
- Optional study trip to Brussels or Geneva during the spring semester, including visits to European institutions and other international organisations and seminar discussions with practitioners.

Not all electives will run every year
Summer Semester
- Dissertation
Books and journal articles needed for the course will be available online through the UL Glucksman Library.

- Bachelor鈥檚 degree ( Level 8) in a relevant discipline (e.g. economics, history, geography, political science, sociology, European studies, law) with at least a second-class honours (2:2)
- Applicants may be shortlisted and invited to interview

鈥淭he MA in International Studies programme equipped me with the knowledge and experience necessary to succeed in my career in research and international relations.
I work in the CEO鈥檚 office at IDA Ireland, the Irish Government鈥檚 Foreign Direct Investment Agency. We partner with investors to help them establish or expand operations in Ireland.
Based in Dublin, I liaise with senior management, client companies, governments, media, and other stakeholders on behalf of the CEO.
I previously worked with the Technology Division at IDA, supporting marketing, administration, and market research.鈥
