Brief Description
The MSc in Marketing, Consumption & Society is designed for graduates who want to build a career in marketing while critically exploring the role of consumption and marketing in contemporary life.
This programme goes beyond traditional marketing by combining advanced theory, consumer culture studies, and hands-on leadership and digital skills. The programme provides real world鈥 experience through live projects, and is supported by specialist laboratory facilities to foster creativity and collaboration.
Ideal for those who want to understand both the power and responsibility of marketing in shaping organisations and society, preparing them for roles in marketing management and strategy, customer insights, digital and social media marketing, brand management. or market and consumer research.
With its focus on critical analysis, creative thinking and applied decision-making, the MSc equips graduates for dynamic marketing careers both in Ireland and internationally.

During this programme, you will:
- Develop a strong understanding of marketing as both a business philosophy and an organisational function.
- Critically engage with major theoretical debates and contemporary issues shaping the discipline.
- Examine consumer culture and behaviour and reflect on marketing鈥檚 responsibilities to both organisations and society.
- Gain knowledge of key research philosophies, methodologies, and practices in marketing.
- Undertake independent research on an important topic within the field.
- Build essential personal and professional skills including decision-making, creativity, collaboration, and critical reflection.

Year 1
Autumn Semester
- provides a critical perspective on the concepts at the centre of the marketing enterprise.
- explores the nature and dynamics of consumer culture and the business of consumption.
- combines theoretical reflection and practical discussion on key issues concerning marketing鈥檚 impact on society.
- provides a background to debates around the philosophy of marketing science.
Spring Semester
- explores the strategic role of marketing in the modern organisation and the dynamics of marketing leadership.
- uses case study and computerised simulations to assess and learn from factual scenarios.
- examines the impact of consumption symbolism and marketing imagery in works of popular culture.
- introduces the principles and practice of consumer ethnography with a strong emphasis on the practical application of learning.
- examines the rapidly growing domain of digital marketing.
Summer Semester
- facilitates students in the production of an independent research paper.
Books and journal articles needed for the course will be available online through the UL Glucksman Library.

- Applicants should hold a bachelor鈥檚 degree ( Level 8,) with at least a second class honours, grade 2 (2:2), from a range of relevant disciplines (such as business studies, cultural studies, media studies and sociology).
