Brief Description

The MEng in Mechatronics is a one-year, full-time programme that equips graduates with in-demand skills in automated hardware and software systems, with a strong focus on real-world industrial application.

The programme covers areas such as automation and control, machine vision, 3D CAD modelling, system integration, and advanced manufacturing technologies.

Students also complete a substantial Mechatronics project, developing original, high-analytical solutions to applied engineering problems. The course aligns with global manufacturing trends, including Industry 4.0, to prepare engineers for high-tech, competitive industries.

Suited to engineering graduates or professionals seeking to specialise in mechatronics, automation, or smart manufacturing.

During this programme, you will:

  • Develop a competence in automated hardware and software systems and the ability to apply them to specific cases in a manufacturing setting.

  • Gain knowledge of trends and current approaches in manufacturing such as Industry 4.0 and how they provide a competitive advantage in a global manufacturing context.

  • Acquire insights into the function of automated manufacturing systems in a global economy and develop management skills in this area.

  • Focus on 12 core modules based on automation and control, 3D modelling, machine vision, project management and business strategy.

Key information:

  • Complete full-time in one year

  • Delivered on campus

  • Modules taught during autumn and spring semesters

  • Submit a Mechatronics Project (thesis) during the  summer semester

You will learn through a blend of:

  • Lectures, workshops, and hands-on activities

  • Reflective practice and guided research

  • Regular feedback from faculty and peers

Year 1

Autumn Semester

  • an introduction to Low Cost Automated Systems and their applications in a manufacturing situation.

  • provides a broad, strategic overview of automation and mechatronics processes appropriate for management.

  • provides the knowledge, skills and understanding to apply project management principles, tools and techniques to deliver value to the organisation.

  • explores emerging and existing technologies in the areas of Mechatronics and Manufacture.

  • details the various automated components contained within typical industrial products.

Spring Semester

  • use previously learned course material and your own skillset to solve real-life mechatronics projects.

  • studies the application of digital computers to control engineering problems.

  • integrates the fundamental cognate disciplines and functional subjects necessary to manage an organization at the corporate level.

  • introduces students to machine vision, one of the enabling technologies necessary for modern robotics.

  • introduces students to the core concepts, procedures and techniques used to create parts, assemblies and drawings using the SolidWorks parametric modelling system.

  • provides an introduction to industrial sensors and their applications in automation and to advanced control systems within automation.

Summer Semester

  • students complete a project and present it in an appropriate written and verbal format.

Relevant course materials - such as books and journal articles - will be available digitally via the UL Glucksman Library鈥檚 online resources.

For more information on each module, you can search the faculty, school and module code on UL鈥檚

  • Applicants should hold a bachelor鈥檚 degree ( Level 8) with at least a second-class honour, grade 2 (2:2) in a relevant discipline.

  • The university may shortlist and invite you to an interview.
