Do you want a rewarding career helping people to recover from injury, manage pain, and improve mobility?
UL’s MSc in Physiotherapy is a two-year, full-time programme that provides a graduate route for you to become a qualified physiotherapist.
The programme combines academic study with hands-on clinical experience. It is designed for graduates from any discipline, not just those with a science degree, who want to transition into a career in physiotherapy.
This master’s is accredited by CORU, the state registration board for Physiotherapy in Ireland. Graduates are eligible for membership of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists (ISCP). On graduation, you will be eligible to practice in Ireland and to apply for professional registration in other parts of the world to build a career in hospitals, rehabilitation centres or in private practice.
With a strong focus on leadership, collaboration, and innovation, you will master clinical reasoning, therapeutic interventions, and person-centred care. while applying evidence-based approaches to physiotherapy.
During this programme, you will:
- Develop the clinical reasoning and practical skills needed to assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of conditions across musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiorespiratory physiotherapy.
- Gain 1,000 hours of supervised clinical experience, working in real-world healthcare environments alongside experienced professionals.
- Learn to apply evidence-based physiotherapy techniques to support patient rehabilitation, pain management, and mobility improvement.
- Build leadership and teamwork skills, preparing you to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
Key information:
- Complete full-time over two years.
- Delivered on campus and through practice-based learning.
- Modules will be taught over two years during the autumn, spring and summer semesters.
- Second year includes a research project tailored to your practice and career goals.
- You will graduate with a Level 9 Master’s qualification, preparing you for a professional career in physiotherapy.
You will learn through a blend of:
- Lectures, workshops, and experiential learning
- Reflective practice and supervised research
- Practice placements
- Regular feedback from faculty and peers through group work and assessments
Year 1
Autumn Semester
- will introduce the core principles of physiotherapy practice.
- will develop your understanding of physiotherapy interventions for respiratory conditions and acute care management.
- will explore the principles of movement analysis and neurological rehabilitation strategies.
- will cover a range of topics designed to prepare students for their practice education experiences.
Spring Semester
- will teach you how to assess and manage common neuromusculoskeletal conditions in physiotherapy practice.
- will introduce you to key research methodologies to support evidence-based physiotherapy.
- will examine physiotherapy interventions for cardiovascular conditions and rehabilitation strategies.
- will use case studies to explore the role of exercise in rehabilitation and promoting physical activity in different populations.
- will provide your first supervised clinical placement, allowing you to apply physiotherapy techniques in a real-world setting.
Summer Semester
- will allow you to learn directly from contact with experienced practicing therapists and the real world of clients.
- will see you work closely with your supervisor to finalise your ethics application, recruiting, data collection and/or literature review.
Year 2
Autumn Semester
- will expand your clinical experience, building confidence in patient assessment and treatment.
- will see you work closely with your supervisor to advance your research project.
- will integrate knowledge across multiple physiotherapy specialisms, focusing on complex patient cases.
- will explore the impact of chronic inflammatory conditions and their management in physiotherapy.
Spring Semester
- will introduce leadership and service development strategies in physiotherapy practice.
- will be your final clinical placement, ensuring you are fully prepared for professional practice.
- will enable you to complete your research, synthesising findings into a final project.
- will develop your clinical reasoning skills for working with complex and multi-faceted patient cases.

- Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree ( Level 8)) with at least a second-class honours, grade 2 (2:2) in any discipline.
- If you meet this requirement, the (Graduate Medical School Admission Test) will be used as the only way to select students for this programme.
- Students in their final undergraduate year can apply but must show they meet all entry requirements by the end of June in the year the programme starts.
- Successful applicants must have Garda clearance, health screening, CPR certification and vaccinations before placement (any costs will be covered by the student). More information on Student Vetting
International students:
- North American applicants should apply through , submitting a cover letter and CV via their application portal.
- International applicants, outside of EU and North America, should apply directly. The university will shortlist and invite you to an interview. 
- If English is not your first language and you have not studied in an English-speaking country, you must have an acceptable English Language qualification. An IELTS score of 7.5 with no less than 7.0 in any component is required.

- To make sure we can review your application quickly, please:
- Upload all documents. Your application can’t be reviewed until we have all the documents on the checklist.
- Title the documents you are uploading. For example, "Personal Statement", "Undergraduate Transcript", "Postgraduate Transcript", "English Language Certificate" etc.
- *If you are waiting to graduate, submit your application with the documents you have to date, you don’t need to have finished final exams before applying.
