Brief Description

This one-year, full-time Master of Arts in Serious Crime Investigation programme is designed for graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma in Serious Crime Investigation which is delivered by the Garda College and accredited by ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓÆµ (or an equivalent qualification).   

It’s ideal if you’re a member of an Garda Síochána or a professional working in law enforcement who wants to build on your existing expertise and take your career to the next level. 

You’ll develop an advanced understanding of the legal and procedural issues surrounding serious crime investigation. The programme focuses on independent research and legal analysis, culminating in a substantial dissertation on a topic of your choice. 

You’ll be supported by expert faculty and gain the skills needed for senior roles in policing, policy, or further academic study. 

 

During this programme, you will: 

  • Build on the expertise and understanding of conducting serious crime investigations gained through the postgraduate Diploma in Serious Crime Investigation. 

  • Deepen your understanding of legal frameworks and investigative practice. 

  • Complete a 15,000-word dissertation on a topic related to serious crime. 

  • Learn how to conduct independent legal research using traditional and digital tools. 

  • Develop advanced analytical and critical thinking skills. 

  • Prepare for doctoral study or senior roles in law enforcement and justice. 

Key information: 

  • Complete full-time in nine months 

  • Delivered through distance learning 

  • Submit a 15,000-word dissertation at the end of the final semester 

You will learn through a blend of:  

  • One-to-one academic supervision 

  • Independent legal research and writing 

  • Regular feedback from your supervisor 

Books and journal articles needed for the course will be available online through the UL Glucksman Library.

  • Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree ( Level 8) with at least a second-class honour, grade 2 (2:2) in the Postgraduate Diploma in Serious Crime Investigation, which is accredited by the ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓÆµ, or an equivalent programme.
