Are you an allied healthcare practitioner seeking to enhance your clinical expertise, academic capabilities and leadership qualities?
UL’s one-year, full-time or two-year, part-time Master of Science in Advanced Healthcare Practice is designed to enhance your clinical and academic capabilities to meet new and emerging challenges in healthcare.
Tailor your master’s degree to suit your career ambitions in physiotherapy, occupational therapy, dietetics, speech and language therapy or related health sectors.
Modules such as Promoting Quality and Safety in Healthcare, Intercultural Care and Applied Behaviour Change are directly relevant to multidisciplinary clinical environments.
During this programme, you will:
- Develop advanced capabilities in clinical leadership, service improvement, and evidence-based decision-making—essential for senior roles in healthcare.
- Flexible, career aligned learning allows you to choose from a range of modules tailored to your professional interest.
- Learn alongside professionals from various allied health disciplines, fostering teamwork and broadening your perspective on integrated patient care.
- Gain hands-on experience in healthcare research through a supervised thesis, enhancing your ability to critically evaluate and contribute to clinical evidence.
Key Information:
- Complete full-time in one year or part-time over two years.
- Blended delivery - online and on campus.
- Delivery is subject to your module selection.
- Modules listed with an (O) have previously been delivered online and may be available in future semesters, subject to confirmation. Remaining modules are delivered on campus.
- Students take modules totalling 90 ECTS credits during the programme- Two core modules of 12 ECTS each and additional modules from the elective listing.
- ECTS is a standard system across Europe for measuring learning achievements. ECTS credits for each module are listed below.
- Full time students will take 60 credits in year 1. Part-time students will take 48 credits in year 1.
- Modules taught during autumn and spring semesters. For full-time students the dissertation modules are delivered during the summer semester. For part-time students, some modules may be delivered in the summer semester.
Submit dissertation at the end of the final semester.
- You will graduate with a MSc in Advanced Healthcare Practice.
- Students who have completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Clinical Practice may be eligible to apply for exemptions on the master's programme. Exemptions are subject to approval by the Student Status Committee. Please contact the programme team prior to registration for more details.
- Exemptions for modules outside of the MSc in Advanced Healthcare Practice are subject to approval by both the programme team and the Student Status Committee. Exemptions will be considered for modules completed within the past eight years.
- Modules with (M) beside them can be taken as independent micro-credential .

Autumn Semester
Core module
- 12 ECTS equips students with the skills and knowledge to adopt evidence-based practice.
Electives
- 9 ECTS / 9 ECTS allows students to explore discrete projects that answer or address challenges or needs in their clinical practice under the guidance of an academic.
- Principles of Primary & Community Care (M) (NS6034) 9 ECTS explores the principles of primary and community care in a dynamic healthcare environment.
- Leading and Managing Practice (M) (NS6035) 9 ECTS explores many facets of the leadership and management role and what they mean for nurses and other healthcare professions.
- 6 ECTS explores applicability of social influence and attitude change strategies to specific social contexts.
- 6 ECTS equips students with knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to apply project management principles, tools and techniques to deliver value to the organisation.
- , 6 ECTS provides an introduction to the fundamentals of organisational behaviour issues and innovation management.
- 6 ECTS explores the concepts behind the Lean tools, and examines the various elements involved in effectively using these to support the organisation's Lean transformation.
- 9 ECTS explores the scientific study of wellbeing and optimal human functioning for individuals, groups, communities and organisations.
- 12 ECTS explores different educational approaches relevant to clinical practice and to develop an understanding of the foundations of health professions education.
Spring Semester
Core module
- 12 ECTS enhances your abilities to understand and engage in all aspects of the research process.
Electives
- 6 ECTS explores theory, evidence and practice education experiences through inter-professional engagement in complex scenarios in a co-learning group-based environment.
- 12 ECTS explores the concept of quality and safety in healthcare in promoting quality patient outcomes.
- Intercultural Care (M) (NS6040) 9 ECTS examines knowledge, skills and attitudes required to provide competent care in culturally appropriate ways.
- 9 ECTS and 9 ECTS allows students to explore discrete projects that answer or address challenges or needs in their clinical practice.
- 6 ECTS introduces students to qualitative methods generally and to a range of specific qualitative methods.
- 6 ECTS equips students with knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to apply project management principles, tools and techniques to deliver value to the organisation.
- 9 ECTS explores health behaviour change theories from psychology and develop students' skills to evaluate existing interventions and develop their own.
Autumn / Spring Semesters
- 15 ECTS and 15 ECTS make up the dissertation component of the programme, where students define a research question and address it with support from a supervisor.

* Places on this module are limited, and enrolment is not guaranteed. The module is delivered online, with one mandatory in-person teaching day.

- Every effort will be made to assign a supervisor with relevant expertise for your project. If this is not feasible, applicants will be contacted to discuss potential adjustments to the project to ensure appropriate supervision.
