During this programme, you will:  

• Develop advanced clinical decision-making skills needed to enhance care and improve outcomes for women and their babies. 

• Complete specialist modules in Leadership, Quality and Governance, designed to evolve your practice and prepare you for senior roles in midwifery. 

• Grow as an innovative, woman-centred practitioner, learning to assess and manage care in partnership with women and their families. 

• Understand the value of multidisciplinary collaboration, and how it contributes to the provision of high-quality, evidence-based care. 

Key information:  

• Complete full-time over two years. Taken on a part-time basis 

• Blended delivery – on campus and online   

• Modules taught during autumn and spring semesters. You can click here for a schedule of lectures.       

• As part of the clinical practicum modules, you will complete Nurse/Midwife Prescribing. 

• Can be used to complete 60 credits towards Master of Professional Practice (MPP)

Year 1 

Autumn Semester 

• explores how to become a leader in promoting the delivery of quality and safety in meeting individual and population healthcare needs. 

• develops the expertise necessary to function as an advanced nurse/midwife practitioner. 

Spring Semester 

• critically examines professional accountability and responsibility governing the role of nurse/midwife prescribing. 

• enhances knowledge and skills necessary for nurse/midwife prescribing. 

• develops advanced knowledge and skills to undertake a comprehensive health history and clinical assessment. 

• supports the application of theoretical knowledge to clinical practice. 

• provides a broad understanding of prescribing practice and interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary teamwork. 

Year 2 

Autumn Semester  

• enables students to develop competence in the five principles for advanced midwifery practice. 

Spring Semester 

• develops clinical knowledge and practice at an advanced level within the student’s specific area of practice. 

Books and journal articles needed for the course will be available online through the UL Glucksman Library.

• Have a minimum of an MSc degree in Nursing or Midwifery or equivalent.   

• Be a registered midwife on the current register of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland. 

• Be engaged in practice as a registered midwife for at least three of the last five years, with a total of one year's full-time experience in the specific area of practice. 

• Students are expected to work in a practice setting throughout the programme. 

• Provide nomination and confirmation of a clinical supervisor/mentor and professional supervisor/mentor.

Please note that international study visas are only available to students studying full-time in Ireland. This programme does not qualify for a study visa. 

Annual fees are billed by semester. Once registered, students may be eligible to apply for a monthly payment plan.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Practice Midwifery can lead graduates to the following sectors and careers:     

• Advanced Midwife Practitioner (RAMP)
• Registered Midwife Prescriber (RMP).

I completed the Postgraduate Certificate Advanced Practice (Midwifery) at the ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ, an experience that has been both challenging and immensely rewarding. I had previously completed an MSc and Certificate in Nurse/Midwife Prescribing ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ.  

Balancing full-time work with academic responsibilities demanded careful organisation and dedication. Finding the time for reading, assignments, and reflection alongside the demands of a busy clinical role was not easy, but it strengthened my ability to prioritise and manage competing pressures, skills that are invaluable in my professional life.  

The most rewarding aspect of the programme was engaging in and completing the programme clinical requirements, in collaboration with my supervisors. Successfully achieving full sign-off of competency and capability requirements was significant. This milestone represented not only the successful completion of the course but also my growth in confidence, knowledge, and clinical expertise.  

The Postgraduate has equipped me with advanced knowledge and evidence-based skills that I apply every day in my role, enhancing the care I provide to women and their families.  

My advice to anyone undertaking this programme is to embrace every learning opportunity, the effort is absolutely worth it.
