Brief Description
Learning outside the classroom is a growing part of physical education and youth development.
This 6-week micro-credential explores adventure and water-based activities through a pedagogical lens, helping you design safe, effective learning experiences in outdoor and aquatic settings.
This module is ideal for teachers, coaches, and educators. Through practical labs and lectures, you’ll gain confidence to teach a range of land and water-based activities aligned to the Junior Cycle PE syllabus.
This module can be taken as a standalone University Certificate of Study (UCOS) module or as part of a pathway to a larger award.
During this module, you will:
Develop core adventure education skills, including risk assessment, problem-solving, cooperation, and reflective practice.
Build practical competence and confidence in outdoor and water-based activities, aligned with Junior Cycle physical education syllabi.
Learn how to plan and deliver safe, inclusive, and curriculum-relevant sessions, incorporating school protocols and environmental awareness.
Enhance your professional practice with digital tools and gain insights into teaching off-site and adapting activities for diverse learners.
Key Information:
This micro-credential will be delivered online over 6 weeks.
You will be assessed using continuous assessment methods, including online quiz, practicals and a booklet for a chosen outdoor adventure framed for Irish PE curriculum and then design and teach the activity aligned with Irish curriculum outcomes. There is no final exam.

To help you to be successful on this course:
Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree ( Level 8) with at least a second-class honours, grade 2 (2:2).
If applicants have a lower result, they may be considered on a case-by-case basis if they can provide evidence of 2 or more years’ experience in an educational setting.
The university may/will shortlist and invite you to an interview.

This course will go ahead if it meets minimum enrolment number.
Completing this module doesn’t guarantee you a place in a full programme. If you want to apply for a full programme, you must meet the specific entry requirements for that programme.

HCI Micro-Credential Course Learner Subsidy
Candidates who satisfy the eligibility criteria can qualify for 50 per cent funding, subject to the availability of places. The subsidy is automatically offered on application. To check if you are eligible, please read our Eligibility Criteria.
Applicants may only apply for and receive one subsidised course per semester.
