Brief Description

Pursue a career in the civil engineering sector in Ireland or abroad with UL’s full-time, one-year Master of Science in Civil Engineering. 

The programme offers advanced training in core civil engineering disciplines, equipping graduates with the technical and professional expertise needed for modern engineering practice. 

Developed to meet industry demand and with links to UL’s leading research institute - Bernal Institute, the programme combines high-level skills in design, analysis, and communication with a strong focus on sustainability and climate action.  

This programme will suit you if you want to advance your employment prospects across subdiscipline areas such as environmental, energy, geotechnical and structural engineering. 

The programme fulfils the educational requirements of Engineers Ireland for a master's degree in an engineering discipline for Chartered Engineer status. 

During this programme, you will:  

  • Learn to identify ethical, social and professional responsibilities and dilemmas faced by contemporary civil engineers with an emphasis on sustainability and climate change. 

  • Develop project planning and management strategies to provide solutions within a fixed timeframe. 

  • Focus on a wide range of challenges across society where civil engineers contribute solutions and knowledge in areas such as environmental and energy engineering, structural engineering and transport engineering. 

  • Undertake a significant research project on a specific problem at the forefront of civil engineering; formulate feasible solutions, and present results. 

Key information: 

  • Complete full-time in one year  

  • Delivered on campus 

  • Modules taught during autumn and spring semesters 

  • Two core modules in autumn and spring 

  • One non-technical module each semester 

  • Choose three technical elective modules each semester 

  • Submit a Research Project (thesis) at the end of the summer semester, worked on across all three semesters. 

You will learn through a blend of: 

  • Lectures, project-based learning (PBL) workshops, and experiential learning 

  • Reflective practice and supervised research 

  • Regular feedback from faculty and peers through group work and assessments 

Year 1 

Autumn Semester  

Core modules: 

  • develops a student’s ability to design, plan and carry out a research project. 

  • prepares engineering students for publishing or writing as a part of their professional careers and/or further postgraduate studies.

  • develops skills in researching topics and identifying issues associated with current practice.

Summer Semester 

  • enables students to produce a technical paper in a format suitable for publication, with an abstract that provides a clear executive summary of the work performed.

  • Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree ( Level 8) with at least a second-class honour, grade 2 (2:2) in Civil Engineering, or closely related field.

  • Title the documents you are uploading. For example, "Personal Statement", "Undergraduate Transcript", "Postgraduate Transcript", "English Language Certificate" etc.
  1. *If you are waiting to graduate, submit your application with the documents you have to date, you don’t need to have finished final exams before applying.

Annual fees are billed by semester. Once registered, students may be eligible to apply for a monthly payment plan.
