This course is designed for anyone whose work needs to respond to the challenges posed by our changing climate — including planners, engineers, insurance agents, agribusiness professionals, scientists, politicians, policymakers, environmental and landscape visual impact assessors.
Our one-year, part-time Professional Diploma in Climate Adaptation and Sustainability gives you essential geographic knowledge about our environment and ecosystems. The services they provide and the hazards we face and explores how society can become more sustainable.
You will also develop skills to critically assess readings, communicate your work effectively in written and digital formats, and apply Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software to real-world scenarios.
This programme will earn ECTS credits towards a Flexible Masters Pathway, allowing students to combine Postgraduate awards to achieve a Master’s over time.
During this programme, you will:
- Acquire key geographic knowledge about the environment and ecosystems.
- Explore the range of services provided by urban ecosystems.
- Examine sustainability in environmental and societal contexts.
- Develop GIS skills to analyse geospatial data and propose solutions.
- Improve your capacity for critical assessment and reflective practice.
- Communicate your work in written and digital formats.
Key Information:
- Complete part-time in one year
- Delivered online
- Modules taught during autumn and spring semesters
- Approx. 12 weeks per semester
- Submit a portfolio at the end of the final semester
- Modules marked (M) can be taken as independent MicroCreds
- Can be used to complete 30 credits towards Master of Professional Practice (MPP)

- Reflective practice and guided research
- Regular feedback from faculty and peers

Year 1
Spring Semester
- Environmental Geospatial Data Analysis (M) (GY5021) trains students to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software to analyse environmental and other geospatial data.
- Urban Ecosystem Services (M) (GY5031) explores the range of services provided by ecosystems in urban settings.
- allows students to demonstrate independent and self-determined learning by creating their own portfolio.
Summer/Autumn Semester
- Climate Hazards (M) (GY5022) examines the nature, extent, frequency, risk, and potential for adaption and mitigation against a range of climate hazards
- Sustainability (M) (GY5032) explores sustainability from a variety of environmental and societal (social, cultural and economic) contexts.
- gives students the opportunity to create a portfolio demonstrating the development of reflective practice and evidence-based excellence.
Books and journal articles needed for the course will be available online through the UL Glucksman Library.

- Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree ( Level 8) with at least a second-class honour, grade 2 (2:2) in any subject.
- The university may shortlist and invite you to an interview. 
- Applicants should have at least 5 years of relevant work experience.

- Upload all documents. Your application can’t be reviewed until we have all the documents on the checklist. 
- Title the documents you are uploading. For example, "Personal Statement", "Undergraduate Transcript", "Postgraduate Transcript", "English Language Certificate" etc. 
- *If you are waiting to graduate, submit your application with the documents you have to date, you don’t need to have finished final exams before applying.

Please note that international study visas are only available to students studying full-time in Ireland. This programme does not qualify for a study visa. 
Annual fees are billed by semester. Once registered, students may be eligible to apply for a monthly payment plan.
