Brief Description
Community research is a collaborative approach to investigating real-world issues that matter to communities. It involves working directly with people, organisations, and institutions to co-design and carry out community based participatory research to address identified community needs .
At UL, this means engaging with local and international partners through UL Engage-supported projects.
UL’s one-year, full-time Master of Arts in Community Research + is designed for professionals and practitioners who want to develop applied research skills in a community setting. The programme blends academic rigour with hands-on experience, allowing students to work on live projects that address social, cultural, and political challenges.
The Community Research + Development pathway explores how research supports peacebuilding, policy, and sustainable development in diverse contexts.
This innovative, programme is ideal for those motivated to make a difference through research that is grounded in practice and driven by community needs.
During this programme, you will:
- Engage in hands-on community-based participatory research involving community consultation and co-design.
- Explore development institutions and peacebuilding supports at national and international levels.
- Take core seminars in Development and Peacebuilding.
- Examine global conflict and cooperation through key theories and case studies.
Key Information:
- Complete full-time in one year
- Blended delivery including on campus lectures and seminars, online workshops and community-based project work
- Modules taught during autumn and spring semesters
- Dissertation or large-scale piece of student directed work (e.g. Portfolio or Report) delivered at the end of the summer semester
You will learn through a blend of:
- Lectures, workshops, and hands-on activities
- Reflective practice and guided research
- Regular feedback from faculty and peers
Autumn Semester
- introduces students to the concept of development and ideas about how it should be pursued.
- enables students to work in cross-disciplinary teams on real-world problems, identified with external partners.
Choose 1
- develops understanding of how the European Union formulates and adopts policies.
OR
- serves as an advanced introduction to Public Administration.
Spring Semester
- explores the different conceptions of peace and looks at a range of peacebuilding interventions.
- engages students in faculty designed, applied research projects in collaboration with external community stakeholders.

- develops understanding of the theories and methods used in the empirical study of International Relations.
- focuses on themes of collaborative governance and leadership.
International Political Economy (PO5008) explaining transformations in the global economy
Summer Semester
- enables students to produce a piece of supervised, self-directed research work of 8-10,000 words.
- enables students to apply the disciplinary knowledge they have learnt to multi-faceted real-world problems.
Books and journal articles needed for the course will be available online through the UL Glucksman Library.

- Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree ( Level 8) with at least a second-class honour, grade 2 (2:2) in a relevant or appropriate subject.
- The university may shortlist and invite you to an interview.
