Brief Description

Teachers who have worked internationally can gain a professional qualification in leadership with UL’s Master of Education in Educational Leadership (International). 

This two year, fully online programme supports you to deepen your understanding of educational leadership and enhance your leadership practice.   

It is designed to help you lead with integrity, empathy and purpose in all educational settings.  

It provides teachers with the knowledge, skills and competencies to support their career progression towards Assistant Principal, Deputy Principal and Principal posts.  

It fosters your ongoing professional growth and personal development as reflective and resilient leaders. 

The programme builds on your experience of international educational systems and enhances your professional skills in a supportive learning environment. 

During this programme, you will:  

  • Examine the dynamics of leading learning and teaching by engaging with theories and practices of instructional leadership. 

  • Build advanced knowledge of educational leadership through study of leadership approaches, case studies, and practical tools for leading change. 

  • Examine the impact of national and international policy developments on the professional role of the teacher. 

  • Foster inclusive and supportive leadership and explore strategies that promote equity, well-being, and collaborative and flourishing school cultures. 

Key information: 

  • Complete part-time over two years  

  • Delivered online with evening or recorded lectures. Ideal for working professionals.  

  • Timetable will be developed each Autumn to suit global participants. 

  • Modules taught during autumn, spring and summer semesters  

  • Submit research project at the end of the final semester  

You will learn through a blend of:  

  • Lectures, workshops, and hands-on activities  

  • Reflective practice and guided research  

  • Regular feedback from faculty and peers  

Year 1  

Autumn Semester 

  • examines the dynamics of learning, teaching and assessment with an emphasis on building 'learning capacity' through instructional leadership practices. 

  • develops knowledge and understanding of contemporary approaches in educational leadership. 

Spring Semester 

  • explores the impact of globalisation on the policy and practice of education, and interrogates cultural aspects of educational environments. 

  • examines the impact of national and international policy developments on the professional role of the teacher. 

Summer Semester 

  • explores the dynamics involved in organisational and individual sustainability. 

  • examines mentoring and coaching as key tools in fostering in building leadership capacity. 

Year 2 

Autumn Semester 

  • equips students with the knowledge and skills for research specific to educational leadership. 

  • facilitates students to research and write their master's research project.  

Spring Semester 

  • supports students in completing the research and writing of their master's research project. 

Books and journal articles needed for the course will be available online through the UL Glucksman Library.

  • Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree ( Level 8) with at least a second-class honour, grade 2 (2:2) in a relevant or appropriate subject. 

  • You should have at least 2 years of relevant educational experience, particularly in the areas of primary and post-primary education or other educational environments.   

  • The university may shortlist and invite you to an interview

  • To make sure we can review your application quickly, please:
    • Upload all documents. Your application can’t be reviewed until we have all the documents on the checklist. 
    • Title the documents you are uploading. For example, "Personal Statement", "Undergraduate Transcript", "Postgraduate Transcript", "English Language Certificate" etc. 
  • *If you are waiting to graduate, submit your application with the documents you have to date, you don’t need to have finished final exams before applying.

Please note that international study visas are only available to students studying full-time in Ireland. This programme does not qualify for a study visa. 

Annual fees are billed by semester. Once registered, students may be eligible to apply for a monthly payment plan.
