Brief Description
Family law governs some of the most personal and impactful aspects of our lives including marriage, divorce, custody, maintenance, and child protection.
In this 12-week, Level 8 micro-credential, you’ll explore how Irish family law operates in theory and practice. You’ll examine key legislation, landmark cases, and current issues affecting family structures in Ireland, including the evolving legal definitions of family and parental rights.
Designed for learners in law, social care, public services or anyone with an interest in family law, this module will help you build a working knowledge of legal reasoning and family law processes.
This module can be taken as a standalone University Certificate of Study (UCOS) module or as part of a pathway to a larger award.

During this module, you will:
Learn how Irish law and court processes are applied to protect the family during relationship breakdowns.
Summarise key legal aspects of family law including guardianship, custody, access, domestic abuse, and the legal termination of marriage.
Critically examine how Irish legislation and constitutional provisions define and protect the family unit. Understand the differing rights of married and unmarried parents and their children within the Irish legal framework.
Strengthen your knowledge for careers or further study in law, social care, or child and family services.

This micro-credential will be delivered mainly online over 12 weeks. You will learn through a blend of self-instructional materials, interactive tasks, tutor-led discussions, and real-world data on family life in Ireland.
You will be assessed using continuous assessment methods, including assignments, practical exercises, and online activities.

To help you to be successful on this course:
Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree ( Level 8) with at least a second-class honours, grade 2 (2:2) in a relevant discipline.
If applicants have a lower result or an unrelated qualification, they may be considered on a case-by-case basis with evidence of work experience (Recognised Prior Learning).
