Brief Description
Are you curious about your family鈥檚 past or interested in genealogical research?
This one-year, part-time online certificate helps you explore family history in depth, with expert guidance and practical tools.
You will study the theory, methodology, and practice of family history and genealogy, and learn how to apply research skills to understand familial heritage in local, regional, and national contexts.
The programme is ideal for anyone seeking structured support in conducting genealogical research.

During this programme, you will:
- Explore the theory and practice of family history and genealogy
- Learn how to locate and interpret historical sources
- Understand migration patterns and community formation
- Develop research skills to present your findings clearly
- Receive guidance from experienced lecturers in a supportive academic environment
- Engage with peers through seminars and online discussions
Key Information:
- Complete part-time in one year
- Delivered online
- Modules taught during autumn and spring semesters
- Online classes every second Thursday evening (6:30鈥9:00 PM)
- Additional online materials provided on alternate weeks
- Monthly double classes or seminars held in Dublin, Cork, Youghal, and Limerick

You will learn through a blend of:
- Lectures, workshops, and hands-on activities
- Reflective practice and guided research
- Regular feedback from faculty and peers
Year 1
Autumn Semester
- introduces students to key concepts, theories and methodologies in the history of family, underpinning future study with sound genealogical methods.
- explores key sources - and methods of locating and obtaining access to them - for the study of the history of family.
Spring Semester
- introduces concepts, sources and approaches to the study of family history, in the context of migratory patterns and community formation.
- introduces key methods and approaches to the research of history of family to enable students to present their results in a constructive and positive environment.
Books and journal articles needed for the course will be available online through the UL Glucksman Library.

- Applications are welcome from mature students (typically aged 23+ on January 1st of the year of registration).
- Applicants should have basic IT skills (e.g. Microsoft Word) and be confident using the internet for research.
- Each applicant is assessed individually based on academic qualifications, work experience, motivation, and potential.

Annual fees are billed by semester. Once registered, students may be eligible to apply for a monthly payment plan.
