Brief Description

UL’s unique one-year, part-time, blended Higher Certificate in Human Resource Management and the Digital Workplace provides an introductory qualification in people management with a strong practical emphasis. 

Developed with input from employer representatives from large and small companies and delivered by lecturers who are leaders in the study of people management and digitalisation, it provides the knowledge and skills for students to become effective HR and people management practitioners in an increasingly digitalised working environment. 

The programme is suitable for anyone who has experience of work and wants a formal university qualification that help equip them with the fundamentals of people management. 

Students who successfully complete the programme are eligible to undertake the 2 year part-time Level 8 Bachelor of Arts (Honours Degree) in HRM and the Future of Work. 

During this programme, you will:  

  • Develop an understanding of the key processes of people management
  • Understand the fundamentals of human behaviour
  • Explore the role and impact of digitalisation on human resource management
  • Develop fundamental skills for the recruitment and selection of employees
  • Learn about dealing with grievance and discipline workplace scenarios
  • Gain practical knowledge and skills to design and deliver a learning and development exercise at work
  • Learn about the value of evidence-based approaches to decision making in people management

Programme Delivery

The programme is delivered on a blended basis. Most of the module is delivered through recorded lectures available online for students to watch at any time. Contact with lecturers is through in-person attendance ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓÆµ campus for 8 days in the academic year (4 days in semester 1 and 4 days in semester 2). This flexible delivery model provides the best of both worlds – online content with on-campus days that give students the opportunity to meet lecturers, enhance their learning, and to develop networks with classmates from across industries. The dates for the on-campus dates are:

Key information: 

  • Complete part-time over one year  

  • Delivered online and on campus 

  • Blended delivery – online lectures and 4 on-campus days per semester between 9am – 6pm. The on-campus days involve discussions and practical exercises and are not recorded. 

  • Modules taught during autumn and spring semesters  

  • Submit 2 continuous assessments per module through assignments, presentation and role play.   

You will learn through a blend of:  

  • Lectures, workshops, and hands-on activities  

  • Reflective practice and guided research  

  • Regular feedback from faculty

Year 1 

Autumn Semester 

  • introduces students to the role of people management in contemporary organisations. 

  • introduces students to the nature of Employment Relations in Ireland. 

  • develops fundamental skills applicable to the recruitment and selection of employees. 

Spring Semester 

  • introduces the key concepts in Organisational Behaviour (OB) to help understand some of the fundamentals of human behaviour. 

  • delivers a grounding in human resource development theories, concepts, and issues. 

  • stresses the importance of evidence-based decisions over personal preference, anecdote and unsystematic experience. 

 

Books and journal articles needed for the course will be available online through the UL Glucksman Library.

  • Applicants should hold five passes – five O6 (Ordinary Level) grades or five H7 (Higher Level) grades – in the Leaving Certificate (or an approved equivalent). Note: Grade F6 in Foundation Mathematics and Irish also satisfies the minimum entry requirements. 

  • For those not possessing a pass in five subjects, relevant experience and/or evidence of other part-time courses may also be considered. 

  • Applicants are also required to have a minimum of two years' work experience with at least six months supervisory experience.

  • *If you are waiting to graduate, submit your application with the documents you have to date, you don’t need to have finished final exams before applying. 

EU - €3,200

Please note that international study visas are only available to students studying full-time in Ireland. This programme does not qualify for a study visa. 

Annual fees are billed by semester. Once registered, students may be eligible to apply for a monthly payment plan.
