Brief Description
How do Irish courts decide what evidence to admit, exclude, or question? This online micro-credential explores the foundational rules that govern the courtroom process and shape legal outcomes.
Delivered over 12 weeks at Level 8, this module is ideal for anyone with an interest in the legal process, fact-finding, trial advocacy, or criminal justice.
Using real case law to build practical reasoning skills, you’ll examine key legal principles such as relevance, hearsay, privilege, the burden of proof, and the admissibility of confessions.
During this module, you will:
Learn to differentiate key concepts in the Law of Evidence and understand how they shape legal argument and courtroom procedure.
Apply principles of evidence to real-world scenarios, evaluating the way in which legal norms and facts interact to support conviction or acquittal.
Understand exclusionary rules such as hearsay, privilege, and the admissibility of confessions, and the rationale behind their application.
Build legal reasoning skills using doctrinal methods and case law to construct consistent, logical arguments within the Irish legal system.

To help you to be successful on this course:
Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree ( Level 8) with at least a second-class honours, grade 2 (2:2) in any discipline.
