Brief Description
Preventing and managing infections is essential to protecting patients, staff, and communities.
This 12-week micro-credential prepares you to champion infection prevention initiatives, manage outbreaks, and drive quality improvement.
You will assess national and international best practices, develop governance frameworks, and implement infection control strategies across evolving healthcare services.
You will also explore, surveillance systems and pandemic preparedness, applying microbiological and epidemiological data to infection control decision-making.
The module is delivered in collaboration with clinically based subject matter experts and health service partners.
This module is associated with the Nursing, MSc and Infection Prevention and Control Leadership, MSc
It can be taken as a standalone University Certificate of Study (UCOS) module or as part of a pathway to a larger award.
During this module, you will:
Learn how to critically evaluate infection prevention and control practices, governance structures, and quality improvement plans.
Find out how to investigate and manage outbreaks, including preparedness for epidemics and pandemics.
Master antimicrobial resistance strategies, surveillance systems, and the application of microbiological and epidemiological data in infection control.
Discover how to apply leadership and training strategies to infection prevention, developing interdisciplinary approaches to staff education and quality improvement.

Assessment is based on continuous skill-based online and written assignments throughout the semester.

To help you to be successful on this course:
Applicants should hold a bachelor's degree ( Level 8) with at least second-class honours (2:2) in a relevant discipline.
You should hold a recognised health-related professional qualification and have current professional registration with a relevant regulatory body (e.g., CORU, NMBI, PHECC).
An understanding of the fundamental principles of infection prevention and control is desirable, as learners of this module will consolidate existing knowledge and skills.
