Brief Description

A strong organisational culture is key to effective school leadership, shaping staff engagement, student outcomes and the overall learning environment.

This 6-week, Level 9 micro-credential is designed for Principals and Deputy Principals in Irish post-primary schools who want to enhance their knowledge, skills and competencies to lead organisational culture in their educational institutions effectively. By delving into the intricacies of organisational culture, Post Primary Leaders will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to create a positive and supportive environment within their educational institutions.

Through experiential learning and reflective practice, you’ll explore how to evaluate, shape and sustain a learning-centred culture that aligns with your school’s goals and values.

This micro-credential can be taken as a standalone University Certificate of Study (UCOS).

During this module, you will:

  • Develop strategies to evaluate and enhance organisational culture in a post-primary school setting.

  • Explore the relationship between culture, staff collaboration, student engagement and learning outcomes.

  • Strengthen your leadership through reflective practice, ethical decision-making and inclusive cultural awareness.

  • Gain practical tools to manage change, foster trust and lead school-wide cultural development.

You will be assessed using a reflective assignment provided by your lecturer with no final exam.

Module Content

  • Understand and assess school culture by reviewing what’s working, what’s not, and what could be improved.

  • Use data to see how culture affects staff and students, especially when it comes to learning, well-being, and engagement.

  • Develop effective strategies to build a positive and inclusive environment by creating plans to grow a culture where everyone feels safe, valued, and motivated to work together.

  • Build an environment that welcomes and celebrates diversity and foster a sense of belonging among staff and students.

  • Lead with purpose and integrity by shaping school culture through building trust, fairness, and strong values. Be a role model by leading ethically, resolving conflicts, and making decisions that are fair and responsible while aligning the culture with the school’s goals and values.

  • Grow as a leader through regular self-reflection and by critically examining your own leadership practices, including your strengths, blind spots, and biases. Develop a mindful approach to leadership, staying self-aware and leading in a way that supports a healthy culture.
