Solving business problems and improving processes starts with understanding what’s getting in the way. This 15-week, Level 9 micro-credential gives you a hands-on introduction to Lean thinking and the tools used to reduce waste, improve flow and boost quality.

You’ll explore how Lean evolved and how it differs from traditional production methods. Using tools like value stream mapping, 5S, standard work and Kaizen, you’ll learn how to spot problems in everyday work and make changes that stick.

The module also covers core ideas from the Toyota Production System, including Kanban and pull systems. Whether you’re working in manufacturing, healthcare or services, this micro-credential will help you build the skills to make processes more efficient and deliver better results.

This module is associated with the Professional Diploma in Quality Management - Lean Systems and the MSc Strategic Quality Management - Lean Sigma Systems. It can be taken as a standalone University Certificate of Study (UCOS) module or as part of a pathway to a larger award.

During this module, you will:

  • Understand what Lean means and how it differs from traditional approaches to production and service delivery

  • Learn to apply key Lean tools such as value stream mapping, 5S, standard work, Kanban and SMED

  • Explore how to run and sustain improvements through Kaizen events and continuous improvement

  • Build practical, industry-ready skills to improve processes, reduce waste and deliver better results
