Brief Description

Interest in local history is thriving, and this one-year, part-time evening course is designed to support and enhance that enthusiasm. 


Developed by ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓÆµ, the programme offers a practical and stimulating environment for reading and research in local history. 

 
Whether you're already active in the field, pursuing personal development, or considering further study, this certificate provides a recognised qualification and a strong foundation for deeper exploration.


Location: Delivered in the unique setting of the historic 19th-century workhouse in Portumna and in partnership with the Irish Workhouse Centre. 

During this programme, you will: 

  • Examine key issues in the history of local communities and regions 

  • Develop an understanding of how local history can be researched and written 

  • Identify, locate, and interpret both primary and secondary historical sources 

  • Build practical skills for conducting independent local history research 

  • Learn how to present your research findings clearly and appropriately 

  • Receive expert guidance and support in research and study skills within a welcoming academic environment 

Key Information:  

  • Complete part-time over one year 

  • Delivered on campus in Portumna, Co. Galway 

  • Modules taught during autumn and spring semesters 

  • Submit a research-based project by 1 June 

You will learn through a blend of: 

  • Lectures, workshops, and hands-on activities 

  • Reflective practice and guided research 

  • Regular feedback from faculty and peers 

Year 1 

Autumn Semester 

  • will introduce students to the key concepts, theories, definitions and approaches in local history.

  • will introduce students to the secondary and key primary sources in local history. 

Spring Semester 

  • will introduce students to the main non-written sources for local history. 

  • trains students in the techniques of organising and presenting research, and to think across methodological and discipline boundaries.   

Books and journal articles needed for the programme will be available online through the UL Glucksman Library.

  • Applicants are invited from anybody who will be 23 years of age or over on the first January of the year of registration.  

  • Each candidate is considered and evaluated on their academic qualifications, work experience, motivation and overall potential for the programme.

We encourage you to apply even if you don’t meet the standard entry requirements, as long as you can show that you have the knowledge, skills, and experience needed for the programme.
