Brief Description

UL’s one-year, full-time Master of Arts (MA) in Dance Studies is designed for experienced dancers in Irish, Ballet, Contemporary and other forms who wish to deepen their academic and reflective practice.  

The programme supports students in contextualising their performance experience through critical engagement with theory, ethnography, and cultural analysis. 

You will explore diverse repertoires and styles through both practical and theoretical lenses, while developing skills in fieldwork, ethnographic writing, and ritual studies 

Modules also introduce interdisciplinary approaches to dance, including media technologies, somatics, and documentation of arts practice. 

You will produce a final presentation output or dissertation, allowing you to showcase your research or performance at a professional level 

Graduates are equipped for careers in dance performance, education, cultural policy, or further academic research. 

During this programme, you will:  

  • Develop theoretical and practical knowledge of diverse dance repertoires, including Irish, Contemporary and Western Art styles. 

  • Critically engage with ethnographic research methods and fieldwork techniques used in dance studies. 

  • Explore dance forms in cultural and ritual contexts, linking performance to historical and genealogical roots. 

  • Learn to document and reflect on dance practice through writing, media technologies, and interdisciplinary approaches. 

  • Choose from a wide range of electives including somatics, choreography for camera, cultural policy, and Irish traditional music and dance. 

  • Complete a final dissertation or presentation demonstrating your research or performance expertise. 

Key Information: 

  • Complete full-time in one year 

  • Delivered on campus and online 

  • Modules taught during autumn and spring semesters  

  • Submit dissertation at the end of the summer semester  

  • Full-time students take 4 core modules and 2 elective modules in the autumn semester and 2 core modules and two elective modules in the spring semester 

You will learn through a blend of:  

  • Lectures, workshops, and hands-on activities  

  • Reflective practice and guided research  

  • Regular feedback from faculty and peers  

Autumn Semester 

Core modules:  

  • introduces students to the repertoires of diverse dance performance practices in a variety of theoretical, methodological and dance performance contexts. 

  • critically engages students in discourses surrounding ethnographic research methodologies in the field of ethnochoreology. 

  • introduces basic elements of fieldwork including its ethical principles, participant observation, and interview techniques. 

  • equips students with a knowledge of the emergence and development of ritual studies as an interdisciplinary discourse.

Spring Semester 

  • extends theoretical and practical knowledge of repertoires and styles in diverse dance performance practices from Irish, Contemporary and Western Art dance style. 

  • introduces students to a range of dance forms through an exploration of performance examples in current cultural contexts and linking them to their genealogical roots. 

Electives - Choose 2 from list above 

Summer Semester 

  • equips students to perform specialist repertoire at the standard of a public recital or conduct a research project to the level of a master's standard dissertation or a combination of both. 

Books and journal articles needed for the course will be available online through the UL Glucksman Library.

  • Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree ( Level 8) with at least a second-class honour, grade 2 (2:2) in a relevant or appropriate subject. 

  • The university will shortlist and invite you to an interview and audition if necessary

Annual fees are billed by semester. Once registered, students may be eligible to apply for a monthly payment plan.
