Brief Description

This one-year blended part-time transversal skills-based programme is uniquely designed for professionals working across and within all sectors (public, private, service, health, voluntary, etc.).  

It provides a foundation and comprehensive management introduction for those who aspire to, wish to pivot or consolidate their existing operational experience, and gain a formal, internationally recognised management qualification to advance their career potential and professional impact. (NFQ Level 6, 60 ECTS Credits). 

The programme is book-ended with two compulsory on-campus Saturday workshops, allowing participants to meet the programme team, fellow professionals, apply knowledge, facilitate discussion and collaboration, and debate content covered within online sessions.  

This industry-informed and hugely popular programme introduces and guides students to recognise, integrate, and apply fundamental management principles and theories to their roles & workplace 

Develop a deeper insight and understanding into a first-time supervisor/manager’s role, and how to select, develop and motivate an effective team. Acquire the knowledge and skills base with which to help plan change and continuous improvement. 

During this programme, you will:  

  • Be empowered and challenged to reflect, and engage in self-evaluation, and career development. 

  • Learn to communicate with confidence, make informed decisions and show initiative. 

  • Understand and apply a comprehensive range of management skills and techniques to influence & improve individual, team, and organisational outcomes. 

  • Be able to differentiate the central managerial components of one’s organisational role from the technical and administrative components. 

  • Develop a deeper insight and understanding into a first-time supervisor/manager’s role, and how to select, develop and motivate an effective team. 

  • Acquire the knowledge and skills base with which to help plan change and continuous improvement.

Year 1 

Autumn Semester 

  • : The key role of a front-line manager. Essential Skills of Effective Leadership: Distinguishing Leadership from Management, also the formal and informal aspects of Organisations. 

  • : Motivating & leading your team; Group formation, norms, and cohesiveness; Differences between groups and teams; Team roles and characteristics of effective teams. 

  • : Selecting and Interviewing your Team; HR Planning & Development; Job Analysis Methods & Outputs; Preparing Job Descriptions & Personal Specifications; Regulatory Environment Influencing Human Resourcing. Conducting Selection Interviews; Design, application, and management of induction programmes. 

  • : How to Communicate Effectively; Communication barriers; Personal and team-based communication; Development of questioning, active listening, and assertiveness skills. 

  • : This module seeks to empower and challenge students to engage in self-evaluation and reflection by prioritising their learning and development needs. 

Spring Semester 

  • : Managing your Teams Performance; Key role of the front-line manager; Performance management cycle; Setting and measuring objectives; Self-analysis of job and personal development reviews. 

  • : Managing Employee and Team Relations; Framework of employment law in Ireland; Role of third-party institutions; Legal aspects of employment practices; Grievance and Disciplinary practices. 

  • : Managing Quality Management; Defining quality management; Links to mainstream management theory; Contributions of quality management theories and concepts; Methods, tools, and techniques of quality management. 

 

  • : Environmental triggers for change; Impact of change at the Organisational, team, and individual levels; Resistance to change and the strategies to overcome such resistance; Organisational culture and climate. 

  • : Develop analytical skills in identifying the key management problem(s) depicted within the case study. Apply knowledge and techniques gained across programme modules by solving the key management problem(s) identified; in-depth case study on live management problem; Analysis of case and the application of strategies including - team building, problem-solving, communication and analytical ability, presentation of findings to programme team and peers. 

Books and journal articles needed for the course will be available online through the UL Glucksman Library.

  • Applicants should have at least 3 years of relevant organisational work experience with applicable RPL. 

  • Applicants should be seeking a third-level qualification in management to validate their experience and advance their career.  

  • Applicants should aspire to or hold their first management/supervisor position.

Please note that international study visas are only available to students studying full-time in Ireland. This programme does not qualify for a study visa. 

Annual fees are billed by semester. Once registered, students may be eligible to apply for a monthly payment plan.
