Brief Description

Enhance your knowledge to become an independent prescriber and provide patients with effective access to medication.
UL's six-month Certificate in Nursing (Nurse/Midwife Prescribing) provides flexible, student-friendly access to learning with students based in practice throughout.
The programme supports registered nurses and midwives to expand their skill and competencies while continuing to work in practice.
Benefit from the guidance of a senior medical practitioner who will provide supervision and support.
During this programme, you will:
- Enhance your knowledge and skills for nurse/midwife prescribing.
- Explore professional accountability and responsibility governing the role of nurse/midwife prescribing.
- Gain a broad understanding of prescribing practice and interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary team working.
- Progress towards becoming an independent prescriber and provide patients with effective access to medications.
Key Information:
- Complete over six months. Taken on a part-time basis
- Blended delivery – on campus and online.
- Modules taught during spring and summer semesters. You can click here for a schedule of lectures.
- Undertake four modules in semester 1 and a clinical practicum module in semester 2.
- Graduate with a Level 8 Certificate in Nurse/Midwife Prescribing.
- Modules with (M) beside them can be taken as independent micro-credentials.
- Can be used to complete credits towards Masters Programmes including Advanced Practice (Nursing) and Master of Professional Practice (MPP)  
You will learn through a blend of:
- Lectures, workshops, and hands-on activities
- Reflective practice and guided research
- Regular feedback from faculty and peers
Year 1
Spring Semester
- examines professional accountability and responsibility governing the role of nurse/midwife prescribing.
- enhances knowledge and skills necessary for nurse/midwife prescribing.
- develops health assessment skills appropriate for clinical practice and clinical decision making.
- supports the application of theoretical knowledge to clinical practice.
Summer Semester
- provides a broad understanding of prescribing practice and interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary team working.
Books and journal articles needed for the course will be available online through the UL Glucksman Library.

- Applicants should have competencies at Level 8 on the NQAI Framework.
- Be a registered nurse or midwife on the current register of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
- Be engaged in practice as a registered nurse or midwife for at least three of the last five years, with a total of one year experience in the area where you will be prescribing.
- Students are expected to work in a clinical practice setting throughout the programme.
- Be nominated and confirmed by a senior medical practitioner mentor who will be available to provide the student with supervision support and opportunities including shadowing opportunities during the period of the programme.

- *Academic transcripts and certificates – translated if needed
- UL graduates only need to provide their student ID number
- Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland current registration certificate
- Copy of your birth certificate or passport
- Marriage certificate if your name on certificates vary
- For HSE applicants, confirmation of funding letter from ONMSD
- Site Declaration Forms and Supplementary Forms will be supplied for completion after you apply
English Language:

- To make sure we can review your application quickly, please:
- Upload all documents. Your application cannot be reviewed until we have all the documents on the checklist. 
- Title the documents you are uploading. For example, "Current registration certificate", "Undergraduate Transcript", "English Language Certificate" etc. 
- *If you are waiting to graduate, submit your application with the documents you have to date, you do not need to have finished final exams before applying.

Annual fees are billed by semester. Once registered, students may be eligible to apply for a monthly payment plan.
Please note that international study visas are only available to students studying full-time in Ireland. This programme does not qualify for a study visa.
