Brief Description
Advance your career in older person nursing by deepening your clinical expertise and leadership skills through this specialised Master's programme.
Designed for working nurses, the programme offers a blended and flexible learning approach with online, on-campus and workplace learning.
This two-year Master of Science in Nursing (Older Person) helps you to enhance your skills, knowledge, attributes and competencies for a role within gerontological care.
You鈥檒l explore evidenced based best practices, therapeutic interventions, and person-centred approaches to care for older adults.
On successful completion of year one of programme, students can exit with a Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing (Older Person).
During this programme, you will:
- Explore and analyse best practice in the care of the older person and gerontological care.
- Review current innovations and developments in leading and managing change in practice to promote and advance person-centred care for older adults.
- Demonstrate an understanding of specific therapeutic interventions in the care of the older person.
- Enhance your knowledge and expertise in person-centred nursing care of the older person by completing 500 hours of clinical practice.
Key information:
- Complete full-time over two years. Taken on a part-time basis.
- Blended delivery 鈥 online, on campus and work based.
- Modules taught during autumn and spring semesters. You can click here for a schedule of lectures.
- Undertake six modules in year one, including two specialist modules in older person care and two clinical practicum modules.
- As part of the clinical practicum modules, you will complete 500 hours of clinical practice across both semesters.
- Option to exit with a Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing (Older Person) at the end of Year 1
- Students who achieve a minimum QCA grade of 2.00 at the end of year one may progress to the second year for the MSc award.
- Complete a systematic/integrated review at the end of the final semester.
- Modules with (M) beside them can be taken as independent micro-credentials
You will learn through a blend of:
- Lectures, workshops, and hands-on activities
- Reflective practice and guided research
- Regular feedback from faculty and peers
Year 1
Autumn Semester
- develops an understanding of the social, political, ethical and personal context of the research process.
- Philosophical Underpinnings of Gerontology Care (M) (NS6411) provides the opportunity to develop knowledge and expertise in person centred nursing care of the older person.
- facilitates the consolidation, integration and application of theory within practice.
Spring Semester
- explores the concept of quality and safety in healthcare in promoting quality patient outcomes.
- Management and Coordination of Gerontology Care (M) (NS6412) develops knowledge and expertise in the provision of care to the older person.
- facilitates the consolidation, integration and application of theory within practice.
Year 2
Autumn Semester
- facilitates students to work on a systematic/integrated review.
Spring Semester
- facilitates students to organise, prepare and present final research dissertation.
Books and journal articles needed for the course will be available online through the UL Glucksman Library.

- Applicants should hold a bachelor鈥檚 degree ( Level 8) with at least a second-class honours, grade 2 (2:2) in any discipline.
- Be a registered nurse on the current register of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
- Be engaged in practice as a registered nurse for at least one year.
- Students are expected to work in a practice setting throughout the programme.
- Garda clearance is required.
