Brief Description

Caring for older people is becoming more complex as populations age and care settings evolve. This 12-week, Level 9 micro-credential is designed for registered nurses who want to deepen their understanding of gerontological nursing and deliver more responsive, person-centred care. 

You will  explore the theories of ageing and the ageing process, and how these relate to your practice. The module covers key gerontological nursing models, challenges like ageism, and tools for physical and psychosocial assessment. You will also consider gender, therapeutic relationships, and the importance of a biopsychosocial approach.   

This micro-credential will help you build specialist skills to support older people more effectively in a range of clinical and community settings. 

This module is associated with Nursing (Older Person) - MSc. It can be taken as a standalone University Certificate of Study (UCOS) module or as part of a pathway to a larger award.   

During this module, you will: 

Explain the main theories of ageing and how they relate to gerontological nursing care 

Examine l nursing models and apply them to real gerontological nursing care situations 

Discuss the application of concepts of re-enablement and rehabilitation within gerontological nursing 

Use assessment tools to support a person-centred, biopsychosocial approach to care 

Develop knowledge and skills to provide evidence based holistic person-centred care across the health/ill health continuum 

Use evidence based knowledge and skills to challenge ageism in gerontological care provision 

Key Information

This micro-credential will be delivered in a blended format over 12 weeks.

  • Timetable provided after registration (typically 6 in-person days per semester)  

To help you to be successful on this course:   

  • You must be a registered nurse on the current register of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
