Brief Description

Perioperative nursing involves providing personalised person centred care to patients within the highly technical perioperative setting.   

This 12-week, Level 9 micro-credential is for registered nurses working in a perioperative theatre environment who want to enhance their expertise. 

You will learn the principles of caring for patients in the pre, intra and post operative setting while promoting safety, comfort and dignity at every stage.  

Additionally, you will gain insight into the complexity of the perioperative environment, including teamworking and managing risk to deliver high-quality care. 

This module is associated with Nursing (Peri-Operative Care) - MSc. It can be taken as a standalone University Certificate of Study (UCOS) module or as part of a pathway to a larger award. You must complete this module before progressing to Nursing (Perioperative Care) - MSC (NS6082). 

During this module, you will: 

  • Learn the principles of delivering safe, personalised care throughout the patient’s perioperative journey 

  • Understand your role in anaesthetics, recovery, pain management and collaborative care 

  • Explore how to apply recommended practices, policies and guidelines in theatre settings 

  • Build the confidence to manage risk, promote safety and grow professionally in a complex clinical environment

  • This micro-credential will be delivered in a blended format over 12 weeks. 

  • You will be assessed using continuous assessment, including e-learning activities, presentations and written assignments.

To help you to be successful on this course:   

  • You must be a registered nurse on the current register of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland. 

  • You must be working in perioperative setting to undertake this module.

  • When applying, be sure to include the Module Code NS6091. We can’t process your application without it. You can apply for more than one module using the same application.  

  • By applying, you confirm that you meet the entry requirements and can take part in the course and its assessments.  

  • This course will go ahead if it meets the minimum enrolment number.  

  • Completing this module doesn’t guarantee you a place in a full MSc Nursing (Perioperative) programme. If you wish to apply for a full programme, you must meet the specific entry requirements for that programme.
