Brief Description
Starting a Professional Doctorate requires a clear understanding of academic research, professional practice, and how they intersect.
This 12-week, micro-credential supports both people from a traditional engineering background and other technical experts preparing to apply for the Professional Doctorate in Engineering (DEng) ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓÆµ.
Beginning with an on-campus information day, this practical module introduces key doctoral-level concepts. You will cover research philosophy, knowledge creation, and the student’s role in advancing professional practice.
You’ll also develop essential skills in academic writing, critical reflection, and the integration of professional knowledge.
As part of the module, you’ll identify a significant industry challenge and prepare a Research Proposal Portfolio which you will submit and present to an Academic Board.  
This module is taken as part of a pathway to a larger award.
During this module you will:
Develop confidence in designing research that addresses real-world professional challenges.
Build critical academic skills, including writing, reflection, and portfolio development, for doctoral-level study.
Explore how professional and academic knowledge intersect in professional practice and research.
Prepare a formal research proposal, supported by access to expert-led workshops and personalised feedback.

You will be assessed using a Research Proposal Submission and Presentation to the Programme Board

To help you to be successful on this course:
Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree (NFQ Level 8) with at least a second-class honours, grade 2 (2:21) in a relevant discipline and five years’ experience. We will also consider candidates under recognised prior learning (RPL).
