Brief Description
Develop the skills and knowledge you need to pursue a career in healthcare, government, private, and non-profit organisations with UL’s one-year, full-time or two-year, part-time Master of Science in Public Health.
The programme seeks to move from traditional public health teachings into a competency-based and applied public health way of learning. It offers modules in areas such as health systems, health policy, global health and sustainable development, public health research and data analysis, as well as monitoring and evaluation of public health interventions.
Based on a competency-based learning format, the programme includes case studies based on real-life scenarios, a practicum, and a research project.
During this programme, you will:
- Be able to investigate, design, evaluate, and address public health challenges.
- Critically appraise and design different methodological approaches to address public health issues.
- Design, deliver, monitor, and evaluate public health interventions.
- Identify, interpret, improve and evaluate personal, cultural, and professional competencies to guide your career.
Key Information:
Complete full-time in one year or part-time over two years
- Delivered on campus
- Modules taught during autumn and spring semesters
- Modules are scheduled in-person over three days per week
- Students will work on case studies and attend in person lectures on campus. You will also be required to complete an on-campus assessment, take part in group assignments and complete an individual project during this period
- The practicum module runs for 8 weeks in semester two
- Submit research project at the end of the third semester
- Graduate with an MSc in Public Health
You will learn through a blend of:
- Lectures, workshops, and hands-on activities
- Reflective practice and guided research. Regular feedback from faculty and peers
- Assessment consists of on-campus examinations and individual/group assignments based on the lectures, recommended readings, and case study materials
Full-time
Autumn Semester
- equips students with the knowledge and skills to address complex problems impacting health on a national and global scale.
- provides the skills to tackle practical issues for designing public health interventions.
- develops understanding and competencies in the research process.
Spring Semester
- provides abilities to apply monitoring and evaluation frameworks, methods, models, and approaches for evaluation in different contexts.
- introduces students to the world's most important health challenges, global health governance structures, sustainability challenges and the role of key actors.
- runs over eight weeks and offers a structured, competency-based experience that is planned, supervised, and formally assessed.
Summer Semester
- enables students to apply their knowledge and skills in conducting advanced research in public health.

- Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree ( Level 8,) with at least a 2.1 (second class honours, grade 1).
- Applicants that hold a 2:2 (second class honours, grade 2) or less may be considered if they demonstrate significant public health work experience.
- The university may shortlist and interview applicants.

Please note that international study visas are only available to students studying full-time in Ireland. Only the full-time version of this programme qualifies for a study visa. 
Annual fees are billed by semester. Once registered, students may be eligible to apply for a monthly payment plan.

Funding
Dr Sheila Boland Scholarship in Public Health
This scholarship supports one MSc in Public Health student ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓÆµ each year. The €5,000 award helps fund an 8-week practical placement at the University of Arizona. The scholarship is granted to the top-performing student who expresses interest in this placement, based on results from the first semester.
