Brief Description

Risk assessment and safety planning are essential in modern mental health care. In this 12 week, NFQ Level 9 micro-credential, you’ll enhance your existing nursing or midwifery skills with a focus on risk management, safety planning, and therapeutic interventions. 

Our module focuses on a recovery-based approach to care, equipping you with the knowledge to critically evaluate risk assessment tools, lead complex care management, and apply evidence-based strategies in clinical settings. 

This module is associated with the Nursing MSc. It can be taken as a standalone University Certificate of Study (UCOS) module or as part of a pathway to a larger award. 

During this module, you will:   

  • Learn how to assess risk, develop safety plans, and apply crisis intervention strategies using a recovery-based approach.  

  • Find out how to critically evaluate risk management approaches and therapeutic interventions using evidence-based practice.  

  • Master the principles of person-centered care, balancing safety with positive risk-taking while considering the role of service users and families.  

  • Discover how to apply your learning through a blended format, with three in-person/on-campus days and online activities.  

Key Information: 

Delivered through a combination of in-person teaching and online sessions over the course of the semester.   

This course is assessed through different coursework methods to be submitted online.

  • Timetable provided after registration 

To help you to be successful on this course: 

  • Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree ( Level 8) with at least a second-class honours, grade 2 (2:2) in a relevant discipline. 

  • You must be a Registered Nurse or Registered Midwife on the current register of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).

  • Completing this module doesn’t guarantee you a place in a full programme. If you want to apply for a full programme, you must meet the specific entry requirements for that programme.

This module will enable health professionals to develop a comprehensive understanding of safety planning and risk management in Mental Health Care. 

This module will provide participants with the opportunity to develop expert knowledge, skills and competence related to complex care management issues in accordance with best practice guidelines and policy.
