Brief Description

If you’ve already completed the Special Purpose Award in Serious Crime Investigation (or an equivalent qualification), the Graduate Certificate in Serious Crime Investigation is a one-year full-time online programme that gives you the opportunity to deepen your expertise and take your career further. 

You’ll explore how to apply theory to real-world investigations, develop your critical thinking, and gain a more integrated understanding of the criminal justice system. This programme is ideal if you want to build on your existing knowledge and take on more complex roles in the field. 

Delivered through blended learning, the programme includes four online modules across two semesters. You’ll study topics such as youth crime, sentencing, victimology, and evidence-based approaches to improving societal outcomes. 

By the end of the programme, you’ll be equipped with the skills to lead and support serious crime investigations with confidence. 

During this programme, you will: 

  • Build on your existing qualification in serious crime investigation. 

  • Study four online modules across two semesters. 

  • Learn how to apply theory and research to real-world investigations. 

  • Explore key topics such as youth crime, sentencing, and victimology. 

  • Develop your analytical, cognitive, and technical skills. 

  • Learn from experienced faculty and engage with peers in a supportive online environment.

  • No dissertation or final project required 

You will learn through a blend of:  

  • Online lectures and workshops 

  • Regular feedback from faculty and peers 

Spring Semester: 

  • will consider what it means for professionals who serve society to be evidence-informed, what the value is for citizens, and the practicalities of such an approach. 

  • will blend legal\policy\social science perspectives on youth crime and offer the distinctive element of dealing with real world issues. 

Autumn Semester: 

  • provide a detailed understanding of criminal justice processes and sentencing processes. 

  • will provide students with an understanding of punishment, criminal justice and social regulation. 

 

Books and journal articles needed for the course will be available online through the UL Glucksman Library.

  • Applicants must have achieved a second-class honours, grade 2 (2:2) in the Special Purpose Award in Serious Crime Investigation (delivered by the Garda College in Templemore), or an equivalent qualification.

  • UL graduates only need to provide their student ID number
  • Copy of your birth certificate or passport
  • Copy of your CV
  • Personal statement outlining your motivations for applying for a place on this programme. Please include details of any previous or current volunteering experience in the Youth and/or Community sectors

  • Title the documents you are uploading. For example, "Personal Statement", "Undergraduate Transcript", "Postgraduate Transcript", "English Language Certificate" etc. 
  • *If you are waiting to graduate, submit your application with the documents you have to date, you don’t need to have finished final exams before applying. 

The fees for the programme are €1,500 per year 

Annual fees are billed by semester. Once registered, students may be eligible to apply for a monthly payment plan.
