Brief Description

Developed in collaboration with the Supply Chain Management Institute (IPICS) and our industry consortia partners, this is a work-based executive apprenticeship programme which supports the development of the Supply Chain knowledge base amongst practitioners in organisations.  

This two year part-time on the job programme equips students with the skills and subject matter expertise to lead key supply chain functions including forecasting and planning, procurement, logistics, operations, inventory management, customer service, transport, distribution and distribution. 

This apprenticeship programme is ideal for aspiring or current mid-level managers in supply chain or inventory operations who want to enhance efficiency, optimise performance, and gain recognition as Supply Chain Specialists. 

The programme is designed to help participants, and their organisations gain a competitive edge and deliver measurable improvements in supply chain operations. 

During this programme, you will:  

  • Acquire best-practice methods for efficient and effective supply chain operations. 

  • Develop the skills to respond to rapid changes in demand and capacity by adjusting and optimising supply chain activities. 

  • Understand the principles and practical application of SCOR-DS framework concepts. 

  • Apply your learning through industry focused, business standard projects and assignments. 

  • Collaborate on the improvement of your professional practice and investigate emerging trends to identify current and future challenges in your field.  

Key information: 

  • Complete part-time over two years  

  • Blended delivery - weekly online lectures, virtual classrooms and work-based assignments and projects  

  • Modules taught during autumn, spring and summer semesters 

  • Research, analyse, implement and document a company-based project which you will deliver in presentation and written form 

  • Dedicated in-company apprenticeship mentor 

  • Participate in a ‘Community of Practice’, Summer School and monthly Masterclasses with industry experts 

  • Interact and engage in peer-to-peer learning activities around the academic content 

You will learn through a blend of:  

  • Lectures, workshops, and hands-on activities 

  • Company visits, mentoring and forums  

  • Reflective practice and guided research  

  • Regular feedback from faculty and peers  

Part-time considerations:

  • Emphasis on direct work-based project and assignments 

Year 1  

Autumn Semester 

  • introduces students to a range of frameworks to inform systematic thinking on the alignment, design, implementation and operation of supply chains. 

  • develops management techniques for planning and controlling the flow of materials, information and value in a supply chain. 

  • examines the evolution of production systems and how they are being impacted by developments such as mass customisation and just-in-time. 

  • develops understanding of the influence of motivation, perception, attitudes and group behaviour upon job performance and job satisfaction. 

Spring Semester 

  • explains the context, role and objectives of purchasing activity in supply chains. 

  • provides a broad framework of the basic functions and elements related to logistics and distribution. 

  •   develops an understanding of financial and management accounting. 

  • introduces the ideas of probability and statistics, and explore how probability can be applied in several contexts, including statistical inference. 

Summer Semester 

  • explains the concept of Six Sigma through the definitions of quality and the principles on which quality management philosophies are based. 

  • provides an opportunity to integrate the knowledge and skills learned from study of supply chain management through an online simulation game. 

  • engages students in a community of practice, in-company mentoring, sector and industry masterclasses, summer school and the creation of a portfolio to investigate emerging trends and identify current and future challenges. 

Year 2  

Autumn Semester 

  • ) provides an overview of the issues facing managers for the continuous management of change within their organisation. 

  • enables students to apply the New Product Development theory to a supply chain setting and review the process critically. 

  • develops knowledge on discrete event simulation modelling and its application to manufacturing, logistic and services systems. 

  • outlines why the needs of the customer should transcend all other elements of the supply chain. 

Spring Semester 

  • introduces students to organisational strategy in the business model and the value chain. 

  • equips students with the competencies to cope with rapid supply chain expansion. 

  • provides a framework for evaluating the actions and performance of organisations in the context of sustainable and socially responsible activity. 

  • explores the role of information systems within supply chains and introduces basic programming concepts. 

Summer Semester 

  • enables students to apply their acquired knowledge in a business standard, industry focused project. 

  • engages students in a community of practice, in-company mentoring, sector and industry masterclasses, summer school and the creation of a portfolio to investigate emerging trends and identify current and future challenges. 

Books and journal articles needed for the course will be available online through the UL Glucksman Library.

  • Applicants should hold a Level 7 in a relevant area.  

  • You must have an Irish contract of employment that meets or exceeds the duration of the apprenticeship. 

  • You must have employer support and approval to apply.   

  • If you have a lower qualification, you may also be considered provided you can prove to have industrial experience as well as evidence of the ability to study at Degree level. 

  • The university may shortlist and invite you to an interview 

Sponsoring Company: 

  • Company must complete an approval process with UL and SOLAS and commit to supporting the apprentice throughout the programme. 

  • Must appoint an industry mentor within the company throughout the apprenticeship.

We encourage you to apply even if you don’t meet the standard entry requirements, as long as you can show that you have the knowledge, skills, and experience needed for the programme.

  • Submit and upload all documents. Your application can’t be reviewed until we have all the documents on the checklist.  
  • Title the documents you are uploading. For example, "Personal Statement", "Undergraduate Transcript", "Postgraduate Transcript", "English Language Certificate" etc.  
  • *If you are waiting to graduate, submit your application with the documents you have to date, you don’t need to have finished final exams before applying

Company Registration Process:  No Charge

Online Student Application Fee: €50

Annual Student Fee: €900 

*Fees are subject to change depending on programme of study and external funder’s requirements.  

Please note that international study visas are only available to students studying full-time in Ireland. This programme does not qualify for a study visa

Annual fees are billed by semester. Once registered, students may be eligible to apply for a monthly payment plan.

Funding 

Candidates and Companies who satisfy the eligibility criteria under Generation Apprenticeship can qualify for up to 90% funding of fees, subject to eligibility and availability.   

Companies can also apply for the  of €2000 per annum if you meet the eligibility requirements.
