Brief Description

Caring for a person with a tracheostomy requires specialist knowledge, leadership, and a coordinated team approach.  

This 12 week Level 9 micro-credential equips you with the knowledge and skills to organise, lead, and deliver therapeutic interventions that support adults with a tracheostomy.  

You’ll explore evidence-based practice, emergency care, communication support, and holistic discharge planning—enhancing your ability to lead safe, person-centred care across acute, ward, and community settings. 

Designed for experienced nurses, this module supports leadership in multidisciplinary care, empowering you to improve outcomes and enhance patient safety. 

It can be taken as a standalone University Certificate of Study (UCOS) module.  

During this module, you will:  

  • Develop the knowledge and skills to organise, lead, and deliver therapeutic interventions for adults with a tracheostomy 

  • Explore evidence-based strategies to support safe care, including emergency management, communication, and discharge planning 

  • Respond to the growing need for specialist tracheostomy care across hospital and community settings 

  • Build leadership and clinical judgement skills to improve outcomes and advocate for tracheostomy patients and families 

Key Information:

Delivered in person with online resources over 12 weeks. Learning includes three in-person days, plus an additional day for an OSCE assessment. 

Continuous assessments are assigned throughout the semester. 

Part-time considerations:

  • Evening or recorded lectures   

  • Additional prep and group work time  

  • Timetable provided after registration 

To help you to be successful on this course: 

  • Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree ( Level 8, undergraduate degree, BSc or BA) with at least a second-class honours (2:2) in Nursing and Midwifery or show evidence of recognised prior learning (RPL) as outlined in the (RPL) policy of the University and School of Nursing and Midwifery 

  • You must be a registered Nurse on the current register of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland. 

  • You must be involved in the care of people with a tracheostomy for the duration of the module

  • When applying, be sure to include the Module Code NS6202. We can’t process your application without it. You can apply for more than one module using the same application.  

  • By applying, you confirm that you meet the entry requirements and can take part in the course and its assessments.  

  • This course will go ahead if it meets minimum enrolment number.  

  • Completing this module doesn’t guarantee you a place in a full programme. If you want to apply for a full programme, you must meet the specific entry requirements for that programme.
