Ireland’s position as a leader in flexible learning and lifelong learning was celebrated at the MicroCreds Capstone Event in Dublin on 12 February, marking the impact of a €14.3 million national initiative delivered under the Human Capital Initiative.
The MicroCreds project, led by the in partnership with eight universities, has supported more than 20,000 learners across Ireland through the development of over 600 accredited micro credentials.
Funded by the under the Human Capital Initiative (HCI) Pillar 3, with support from the National Training Fund, the project has transformed how Irish universities design and deliver flexible, enterprise aligned education at scale.
Building a National Micro Credentials Framework in Ireland
A core achievement of MicroCreds has been the creation of a nationally coordinated system for micro credentials in Ireland. This includes:
- A recognised micro credentials framework
- A consistent accreditation approach across universities
- The platform as a single trusted shopfront for short courses
- A scalable model for flexible learning delivery
Together, these developments have strengthened employer trust and positioned Ireland as an international reference point for accredited lifelong learning innovation.
Flexible Learning Designed with Enterprise
A defining feature of the MicroCreds Ireland initiative has been its strong collaboration with enterprise. Universities worked closely with employers from SMEs to multinational organisations to co design micro credentials in high demand areas such as:
- Digital transformation
- Sustainability and climate action
- Leadership and management
- Emerging technologies
This employer engaged model ensures that flexible learning provision responds directly to workforce needs and national skills priorities.
Speaking at the Capstone Event, Paul Johnston, Director General of the IUA, noted that MicroCreds demonstrates what is possible when policy, funding and institutional leadership align to deliver agile, accredited education solutions.
20,000 Learners Engaging in Lifelong Learning
The impact of MicroCreds is ultimately measured in learner outcomes. More than 20,000 people across Ireland have engaged with one or more micro credentials to upskill, reskill or adapt to change, often while balancing work and personal commitments.
David Corscadden, Acting MicroCreds Project Lead, highlighted that beyond the headline numbers, the initiative represents a structural shift in how universities approach lifelong learning, flexible provision and modular course design.
The continuation of learner fee subsidies as MicroCreds transitions to the HEA is expected to further increase participation in accredited short courses nationwide.

The Future of Micro Credentials and the Human Capital Initiative
As the MicroCreds project concludes, partners emphasised that the initiative has moved beyond proof of concept. Delivery models are now established, employer demand is clear, and Irish universities have demonstrated their ability to innovate at scale within the Human Capital Initiative framework.
Sustaining this momentum will require continued alignment between:
- Skills policy
- Funding mechanisms
- Institutional operating models
- National workforce priorities
The MicroCreds Capstone Event therefore marked both a celebration of achievement and a renewed commitment to embedding micro credentials and flexible lifelong learning at the core of Ireland’s higher education system.
