The Library has developed a new resource for Brightspace that teaches students about the Research Information Lifecycle. Complementing the Library’s Assignment toolkit, the Research Information Toolkit is aimed at students doing FYPs, theses and those new to doctoral level research. It will help them navigate their Final Year Project or thesis literature review and develop foundational research skills.

As students step through the 6 units in this toolkit and engage with the structured lessons it contains they will begin to

  • understand the stages of the literature review process, focusing on how to search for and select relevant resources
  • understand the different types of information available for a literature review
  • develop effective search strategies to ensure a structured and comprehensive approach to finding information for their research
  • learn how to use advanced search strategies to ensure searches are focused and efficient
  • effectively organise and integrate their search results into their research
  • be able to critically evaluate their search results to ensure they're using relevant and high-quality information in their research.

This toolkit was used on a pilot basis in some modules in 2025, and testimonials from faculty indicated that "the videos were very useful, the clear progression through the step-by-step process is easy to follow”.

We invite you to access the on Brightspace Discover and faculty can contact us in the library on libinfo@ul.ie for help embedding some or all of this in your programme.
