Demonstrating the ‘Impact’ of your PhD Research
Your PhD is more than a thesis. It's an opportunity to create real change in the world.
Whether you're helping to develop new medical therapies and treatments, informing policy decisions, protecting endangered ecosystems, or advancing how we understand human communication, your research has the potential to have significant impact.
Some researchers may underestimate the broader significance of their doctoral research. For example, a PhD candidate in History or Political Science might produce research that empowers voters to make informed choices about political parties, policies, and candidates. By critically assessing how history is (mis)used in public debate, this research can expose instances where political actors reference the past in ways that deviate from historical or scientific evidence. Such research can be hugely impactful.
How can you ensure that impact happens? How do you move from "this research is important" to "this research can change lives"?
In the Doctoral College webinar on research impact, you will learn about the above and also hear about the following:
Why Demonstrating Impact Matters
Understanding Your Audience and Stakeholders
Examples of Research Impact Across Disciplines
Measuring Impact
Communicating Your Impact
Practical Strategies for Demonstrating Impact
Overcoming Impact Challenges
