Introduction:

The ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓÆµ (UL) Global Office, in partnership with the Indonesian Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology are seeking applications from lecturers within Indonesian Universities, who wish to undertake a PhD with the financial support of a fully funded Indonesian scholarship to cover both tuition fees and maintenance costs of a four year PhD Programme.

Currently within UL there are thirteen Indonesian PhD students registered across the four faculties (Arts Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Engineering, Education and Health Sciences, and the Kemmy Business School). Eka Astuti featured above is originally from the Universitas Gadjah Mada. Eka is currently enrolled on a PhD programme within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

UL welcomes further enquiries from prospective PhD Students funded by the Indonesian Ministry of Education (DIKTI) PhD Funded Scholarship Scheme who are interested in completing a full-time PhD ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓÆµ from 2025 onwards.

Application Process-Next Steps:

1: Expression of Interest Form and Research Proposal:

  • Prospective students should endeavour to identify an appropriate supervisor who has expertise in the applicant’s proposed research area,. Please see information above relating to the areas of research within each of the faculties.  
     
  • When a potential research project or supervisor has been identified, applicants should complete both a draft research proposal and expression of interest form. 
     
  • Further details are available from the Doctoral College website, more specifically, applicants should note section 2, applying if you don’t have a potential supervisor)
     
  • Applicants should indicate within the expression of interest that they intend to finance your studies, (both tuition fees and maintenance costs) via the Indonesian (DIKTI) PhD Funded Scholarship Scheme 2025.
     
  • The expression of interest form, identifying a potential supervisor and a draft research proposal, must be submitted via email to DoctoralCollege@ul.ie  
     
  • In the subject line of the email, potential applicants must include the following text: Indonesian Scholarship Scheme- PhD Expression of Interest - (Applicant’s Full Name).
     
  • The Doctoral College will circulate the documents to the potential supervisor(s) identified within the expression of interest form, requesting the potential supervisor(s) to review both the expression of interest form and research proposal.
     
  • If the potential supervisor wishes to explore the further application, they will contact (via email) the prospective applicant to set up a preliminary on-line meeting.

2: Completing a Full Application:

  • A full application should not be completed until a prospective student has received written confirmation that a supervisor(s) has agreed to supervise your research. 
     
  • Applicants who receive a preliminary agreement from a potential supervisor should complete the full application process. Further details available from the Doctoral College website, ( applicants should note Section 1, applying if you have a research project and supervisor).
     
  • A full application must be submitted via email to (DoctoralCollege@ul.ie ) In the subject line of the email, potential applicants must include the following text: Indonesian Scholarship Scheme- PhD Application - (Applicant’s Full Name).
     
  • Applications to register for a PhD are reviewed on a monthly basis. 
       
  • A fully completed application which has been submitted along with the relevant documents (research proposal, academic qualifications and English language requirements, normally takes between four to six weeks for an offer letter to be issued.

Academic Qualifications:

  • An honour's primary bachelor's degree with a minimum classification of 2.1 honour's or equivalent qualification;
    and/or
  • An appropriate master's degree or equivalent qualification that has been obtained from a University, or other Institution recognised by UL following a period of study similar to that required in UL. 
     
  • Official certification of your third level qualification(s) must be verifiable as part of the application process, this will include full official transcripts of results and final certification confirming your overall academic qualification.   

English Language Requirements:

  • Details in relation to the English Qualifications are available from the Doctoral College website. 
     
  • If you do not meet the English Language Requirements, you will need to contact the English Language Centre (email language.centre@ul.ie ) to ensure that you can enrol on a suitable English Language programme.
     
  • Please note, where applicants are required to successfully complete an English Language Programme, this requirement must be completed prior to entry on the PhD. 
     
  • An applicant who can provide official and verifiable documentation confirming the successful completion of a primary or master’s degree qualification through the medium of English at a recognised third level institution may be deemed to have fulfilled the English Language requirements.
