The , was entitled ‘Fighting (for) the Collective: Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy and Beyond’

The lecture celebrated Ann's distinguished career and explored the evolving role of physical education and sport pedagogy in shaping inclusive, sustainable, and socially just communities. 

Drawing on her extensive research and leadership, Ann highlighted the importance of collective action, mentorship, and collaboration in advancing the field. 

She reflected on her personal and academic journey, the impact of her work on curriculum development in Ireland, and her role as inaugural Chairholder of the UNESCO Chair in Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy for Sustainable Development ɫƵ.

Referring to the theme of her talk, Prof MacPhail said, “I use ‘fighting for the collective’ with the intention of drawing attention to how we can be proactive in supporting sport pedagogy as a group and maintain a collective identity rather than focusing solely on individual gain.”

The main themes of her talk included the following:

• The value of listening to and learning from young people in sport and education.

• The need for research assessment to recognise both visible and invisible contributions, such as mentorship and collaboration.

• The power of community and mentorship in supporting early career researchers and PhD candidates.

• The broader societal impact of sport pedagogy, extending beyond physical activity to promote social justice and sustainable development.

• The importance of holistic scholarship, community, and collaboration in education and research.

Ann’s lecture was both personal and enlightening, emphasising the importance of fighting for the collective good and supporting future generations of educators and researchers.
