The Department of Biological Sciences at the ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ offers immersive summer research opportunities through its UPSTaRT and Summer Bursary Programmes, designed to introduce undergraduate students to the world of scientific discovery. These programmes provide hands-on experience in active research labs, allowing students to explore their interests, develop analytical skills, and contribute meaningfully to ongoing projects.

No prior research experience is required—just curiosity, motivation, and a willingness to learn. Students work closely with academic supervisors and research teams, gaining exposure to cutting-edge techniques and real-world scientific challenges.

Examples of Research Topics

Participants may engage in projects such as:

• Investigating the role of soil microbes in carbon cycling and climate regulation
• Studying neuroinflammation and its link to neurodegenerative diseases
• Exploring the nutritional impact of bioactive compounds in functional foods
• Developing diagnostic tools for equine viral diseases
• Examining biodiversity in Irish ecosystems and strategies for conservation
• Analyzing cancer cell responses to novel therapeutic compounds
