The Centre for European Studies (CEUROS) welcomes Austrian television and radio journalist Miriam Beller for a talk on "Russia: Reporting from a Dictatorship at War". Miriam Beller is a TV and radio journalist with the Austrian public broadcaster ORF. She worked as a correspondent in Russia from 2021 to 2023. During this time, she covered the war against Ukraine as well as political repression within the country. She has also been travelling to European countries neighbouring Russia, to research how the war has fuelled fears of further Russian aggression towards its neighbours. 

This talk will explore the challenges of working as a journalist in authoritarian regimes such as Russia, examine how propaganda functions, and analyse the strategies used to obstruct transparent reporting on the situation on the ground. Beyond the situation of journalists, it will discuss how the war does—or does not—affect the everyday lives of Russians and how political dissent is being suppressed. The talk will further examine possible trajectories for Russia beyond the Putin era and consider how future relations between Russia and the European Union may evolve.
